Cool box

Anyone able to recommend any?

Seen lots of electric cool boxes most in Halfords but not sure if any good? Be interested to hear from any users.

Thanks
S

Re: Cool box

TBH

The one the father-in-law gave us isn't very good

You have to run it 24/7 to keep things cool

I find if you put freezer blocks in it helps

We mainly use ours for caravaning

Re: Cool box

I bought one from Maplin. It works OK, but as they only cool relative to the ambient temperature a very hot day means the contents will be quite warm.

If you only need to keep things cool for a few hours you'd be better off with ice blocks in a traditional cool box.

Re: Cool box

Hi

I am using (for in car and camping) an Campingaz Electric type, it has a car adapter and a mains adapter and works very well. About £60 from Outdoor World (Warrington). They had a VERY similar unbranded one in Aldi the other day for about £35.

FYI - if you budget allows you can get some really nice ones that even freeze your food, I think they use some kind of gas, but you are looking at £150+

Re: Cool box

I've got a good quality Coleman cooler (I'm in the US now) and it will keep ice frozen for 6 days during the summer (if you don't open it), so it'll keep stuff chilled for a couple of days and you can always buy a bag of ice or 2 from a supermarket to chill it down a bit!

That said I bought a no name ice box in the UK, the old thin and tall type, to keep beer cold for a weekend away. Filled it with ice on Friday morning and had to empty the understandably cold ice and water on Sunday afternoon!

Re: Cool box

Hi there,
The Cliquey Buggers on here obviously don't get their Cool Boxes from Halfords... Does it have a normal plug adapter as well? If not ensure that there is a model that has one as when you stick your food in and if it relys on the 12v from the car then you may have to wait up to 6 hours for it to cool therefore you are fighting a loosing battle before you start. I found this out the hard was plus where in the UK do you drive without switching your car off for 6 hours?

Re: Cool box

We had an electrical one bought from Asda for about £25. We found it was quite good at keeping cool things cool but rubbish at making things cool if you put them into it while they were warm. obviously freezer blocks help loads as well but a lot of people forget that freezer blocks should be placed at the top of the cool box primarily.

I have one i got from maplin bright RED with a soft drink emblem on it, it is OK, I ahve a 240V adapter for it and if you cool it with a couple of ice blocks and run it for a few hours it keeps stuff cool (helps my 12V outlet is always live) without ice in it it cools but only 10 below ambient which on 32C day is not very cool!

Re: Cool box

I know nothing about cool boxes, but refuse to be part of the clique. Sorry I couldn't help.

I know people that have bought these types and ended up with a flat battery in their car. Do you need it for camping? Days out? I have an igloo cool box and it keeps ice (and your food) frozen for 5 days but you have to chill it down properly. It doesn't run on gas or electric. If you want one for camping then you could try the uk campsite message board and there will be a lot of people on there with ideas about which would be the best option for you and also probably more that have actually used the cool boxes you mention.
