Not got swine flu but want a docs appointment? not a chance!

Hey guys

im really confused with our doctors surgery. They have said they don't want anyone in with swine flu (Fair enough, makes sense) but we can't get an appointment for normal illness either! The doctors are flat out refusing to make normal appointments. Can they do this????

The system that they have put in place instead is that you ring through, describe your symptoms to the (medicaly untrained!) receptionist who then (with Chinese whispers) passes this on to the doc via a note. He/She then says yes or no to an appointment. This to me is shocking! How can they get away with this? How can an medicaly untrained receptionist pass on a note of symptoms which the doctor then makes a telephone triage diagnosis of?

This has recently become a big issue as my gf discovered lumps in her neck (which we couldn't get an appointment for at first) which then needed checking for cancer - all clear thank f*(K! And I have an ear infection that won't go away with the drops i've been given, can I get a follow up appointment? No!
