It's a weird fact that the "I before E except after C" rule has some serious flaws in it

There is too many exceptions which makes the phrase worthless.

Re: Wierd or Weird?

Isn't their a book about this, published on the back off 'Eats, Shoots and Leaves'. Anyway its ancient news. I believe it is no longer taught in schools.

BTW- loads of people on these forums spell it incorrectly. The poll is a falsehood!!!

Looks like the word I always get wrong for putting them the wrong way round continues to stump me, even though I always seem to do the one I never do!

That's gotta be a load of crap. That's like saying, you can't mark kids down in maths for getting the wrong answers.

Shame about "your" and "you're" not being taught properly either.

I don't necessarily mean in an English Language exam, but say an essay answer in a history exam, you can't mark the student down for using txt spk?

Re: Wierd or Weird?

Ok, a quick google "can i be marked down for txt spk" revealed the following:

txt spk 2 b akcptD

And I quote:

txt spk 2 b akcptD n nu Zealand exams
Educationalists n nu Zealand hav faced a mixd response 2 announcements by d nu Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) dat n genRL examinations d uz of txt spk (txt speak) & abbrz wiL not b automatically maRkd dwn. d authority hz sed dat n subjecz whr lngwij & grammar R not bn specifically assessed crdz wiL b given f d Ans "clearly shOz d req'd undRstNdN", evN f it contaNz txt spk. d majority of commentators R concrnD dat DIS chAng iz not lIklE 2 hlp students b undRstD n d longer term, wen lngwij & cmUnik8shn skiLz R @ d centre of d modern knowLdG economy. It sEmz unlikely dat such chAngz wiL b cn n d UK education SYS.

And for those who prefer English:

Text speak to be accepted in New Zealand exams
Educationalists in New Zealand have faced a mixed response to announcements by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) that in general examinations the use of txt spk (text speak) and abbreviations will not be automatically marked down. The authority has said that in subjects where language and grammar are not being specifically assessed credit will be given if the answer "clearly shows the required understanding", even if it contains text speak. The majority of commentators are concerned that this change is not likely to help students be understood in the longer term, when language and communication skills are at the centre of the modern knowledge economy. It seems unlikely that such changes will be seen in the UK education system.
