Swine Flu - A word of warning for all

I'm not sure exactly why i want to share this on here apart from to warn parents to be vigilant and watch for signs.

One of my wifes friends has just lost her 6 yr old daughter to Swine flu. She fell ill with a sore throat last Saturday and was taken to the doctors Monday. On Wednesday she was taken to the local Hospital but unfortunately died on Thursday. The Autopsy report has just confirmed that she had Swine flu.

She was a perfectly happy 6 yr old with no underlying problems or illness. TBH i feel sick to the bone and am now very concerned at how quickly this can take hold.

I get the feeling that the government are not sharing all the information about how serious this ****ing virus is.

Gutted - Very very Gutted and scared.

Mods - Feel free to move this to the swine flu discussion area if you wish.

Geez, what a terrible tradegy. I can't imagine what it's like for any parent to survive their child. Shocked.

I wonder if the government are calling in favours with the press to supress such stories surfacing?

Re: Swine Flu - A word of warning for all

That is very sad to hear indeed
We had a scare last weekend when my daughter was not feeling well and someone in her nursery was suspected of having this and being treated
she had high temps and complained of neck pains and watery eyes / runny nose

Had to take her to the doctors in the evening after 7pm (were told to stay indoors until then) - turned out to be an ear infection with hayfever too

Thought we were in the clear until my son fell ill on monday - high temps with lots of vomiting , and complaining of headaches etc - turned out to be an ear infection - just a little more serious - we were agin worried as someone in his school was being treated too !

I can understand the anxiety caused during the time the daughter was ill - but cannot appreciate the gravity of the loss being experienced by the family (and I hope I never have to) - very very sad indeed

Hi,

My very deepest condolences to the family - what a very sad thing to happen to them and a wonderful young life lost so soon. I really hope they get this thing under control so we do not have to hear more stories like this.

Re: Swine Flu - A word of warning for all

Condolences to the family.

Lets remember though that there have been nearly 10,000 confirmed cases in the UK now, and only 14 deaths, of which most had other health problems.

Hi Steve,

I am so sorry to hear about your friend's daughter's death. All I can do is offer you, and your friend's family my most sincere condolonces, at this time.

If it's of any consolation to anyone else, it has been announced today that by early-Autumn, lots of Tamiflu vaccine should be available for everyone. However, this is all very much a PR announcement, so until it happens, I wouldn't rely on it.

Just to correct the above:

The vaccine should be available in the Autumn - this should stop those who haven't had it getting it.

Tamiflu is available now - its a treatment for those who have it. ie it's an antiviral drug.

Re: Swine Flu - A word of warning for all

My sincerest condolences at this sad time.

I myself am getting more and more worried as the days progress. My girlfriend would be in the 'at risk' category, having had a kidney transplant and having a very weak immune system. Along with my 2 year old son. This is on my mind a lot these days.

Apologies Stevefish if this is sensitive, but confirmation here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/8147759.stm

Re: Swine Flu - A word of warning for all

Now on the BBC website:

BBC NEWS | UK | GP and child with swine flu die

Quote:
A GP and a six-year-old girl have become the latest to die after contracting the swine flu virus.
..
Chloe Buckley, six, from north west London died after contracting swine flu on Thursday.

The NHS said the case of Dr Day, who was from Dunstable, has been reported to a coroner for investigation. This latest death brings the total number of swine flu-related deaths in the UK to 17.
You have to feel especially sorry for the parents of the six year old. One minute, fine and healthy. Then dead within days, it must be very traumatic.

Just be glad, sad though it is for individuals, that at the minute they are naming individual cases.

If we are really unlucky, the virus could mutate into a more lethal form* before the vaccine is ready, and the morbidity rate could rocket. Then we'd be seeing graphs on the news instead of names.

I wonder then, given this 24 hour news society, how quickly the social norms will break down.

GasDad

* of course the virus could mutate so that it's only symptom is a runny nose.

Re: Swine Flu - A word of warning for all

I'm totally confused.

My 12 year old son has had a bad cough for nearly a week, my 20 month old daughter has a very runny nose.
My employer has issued guidance that says if you believe you have contracted swine flu virus you need to:
- Stay at home.
- Check your symptoms on NHS Choices Homepage - Your health, your choices
- Call Swine Flune Information Line on 0800 1 513 513 for latest advice.
- If you have done all this and are still concerned then contact your GP.

Yet now we are hearing stories of seemingly healthy people dying very quickly.

What exactly are we supposed to be doing? I am worried for my children's safety. Am I over-reacting?

That can only be judged if we know how many perfectly healthy adults / children die from normal flu every year. I'm sure someone around here knows that.

Re: Swine Flu - A word of warning for all

firstly, sympathies for the loss.....

the symptoms of swine flu will mimic the conventional 'winter flu' so all the symptoms eg, sore throat, cold sweats, fever, aches and pains etc.... will be present in one degree or another, depending on severity, BUT in most cases reported so far an added element of diarrhoea is present which currently seems to be a great tell tale sign....

That's the one - Obviously i could not post anymore than i did last night as it was not public knowledge. They have closed the school now, but the one my kids go to less than 1/4 mile away is remaining open.

I'm seriously concidering pulling the kids out for the last 4 days, although my boy was sent home from school with a sore throat and high temperature today anyway
