When did phones stop being for phoning people?

Just found this pole on Yahoo.
Don't you think that maybe one of the options would be "to make a phone call"?

When on your way to a job interview, what are you most likely to use your mobile for?

Answer
  • Checking you have the correct address
  • Checking for travel delays
  • Researching your interviewer
  • Updating your social networking status
  • Checking company share prices
  • Reading breaking news
  • Checking your horoscope
  • Checking the weather
  • Surfing the web to pass the time

I see they've also forgotten the "annoy all the other commuters with my silly ring tone" option.

If you're going to talk silly ringtones who can beat the theme from Fraggel Rock?

The opening riff from the 2004 Turkish Eurovision song ? And yes, I'm well aware of the irony

Re: When did phones stop being for phoning people?

I hardly ever use my phone for phoning, if I want to speak to someone, I use my googletalk app or just text to meet them face to face, I dont like phoning. I cant stand it when people phone me and I'm on the train or bus or something, I either just let it ring (phone always on silent when I am commuting) or quickly tell them I'll phone them back.

I cant stand people willy waving on the trains, trying to impress the person next to them

Too true, I really don't want to see that! It's very inappropriate as well... there could be children watching!

I don't really like mobile phones, but if I must use it I'll phone whoever it is I'm trying to contact.

What the **** is all this? I can honestly say I have never used my phone to attempt any of them.

Maybe I'm out of touch?

Re: When did phones stop being for phoning people?

I use my phone to surf the net, although 3G surfing on my BB-storm is pants compared to wifi on the iphone.
The rest of the app's mentioned on that list, no idea what they are.
My phone will do them though, I'm sure.
If I had an iphone (which I will, when Vodafone get them), I'd do all sorts on it.
Watch videos, play games, drink virtual pints etc.

Re: When did phones stop being for phoning people?

I am very behind it all for my age (23) because I have a old Nokia that use exclusively for phone calls (I hate texting) and I have the ring ring tone. I can't understand why I would use the net on a phone, I pay £22 a month to do so on my laptop at home.

I really would like to see someone make a new phone which instead of throwing every other piece of technology possible into the case was instead a great phone; having a powerful battery, clear screen, nice sized buttons and if possible maybe the phone could get a signal when on a bus or train!

it's not much to ask is it?

I was sick of my wife never hearing her Moby ringtone when the phone was in her bag, so I put this on her phone

She never misses a call now!

I've never got why people seem so bothered about using their phones on a train. I mean your quite comfortably have a conversation with the person next to you/opposite you but when it's over the phone it's a big no no

Although if your one of those people who's voice seems to treble in volume when on the phone I agree

The compass has been on the Google G1 for a while now. You use it together with the GPS. The GPS tells the phone where exactly it is. The compass tells the phone which direction you are looking. Together you can have 'augmented reality'.

I stood on the top of a carpark in Birmingham and turned on an application called wikitude. The camera on the phone looked at the skyline and showed the skyline on the phones display. The GPS and compass meant it knew which way I was looking and so on the skyline it hghlighted the buildings around me on the phones display. For instance Post Office Tower, Rotunda etc.

The compass is also useful in general anyway. I've used it a few times when I haven't got my own with me.

If you look at the picture top right on the link you can see the G1 in action.
