So peer pressure still comes into it, at 18.
I don't think it does at 21.
21YO's should have moved on from that.
The only reason 21year olds have moved on from all that is because they've been able to drink for the past 3 years and have (mostly) grown out of only going out to get absolutely wasted. Raising the age won't solve anything it will just mean the 21year olds will become today's 18year olds.

How about banning "Alcho Pops" which were made with the single intention of getting young people (who did not like the taste of alcohol) to start drinking.

I know it, you know it, they know it, but it will never ever be said.

Because I see plenty of young people walking around with 2 litre bottles of cider and bottles of vodka, should we ban these too?

Why ban something that doesn't even get you drunk

No, as they have been "proper" drinks for years (centuries?) and enjoyed by millions.

It's just that marketing people basically sat round a table a designed these drinks to appeal (target / Influence) deliberatly to the very young market to get them on the "Drinking" bandwagon (yes of course they would deny it)

California Alcopops Battle

Alcopops: Frequently Asked Questions

Most fully grown adults did not really desire these products to be invented in the 1st place, and to be honest, I was gob smacked that they were actually allowed to come onto the market in the 1st place as it's clear to anyone with even a tiny brain exactly why they were invented.

Almost like cigarette companies making special ones with fruit flavours like sweets so youngsters can puff away and get a lovely fruity sweety taste in their mouth that they know and love whilst still getting the hidden nicotine kick in the background.

If they tried that they'd have been stamped on for sneeky encouragement to get kids into the habit.

Funnily enough the drinks industy seems to have gotten away with it.

That takes us full circle to personal responsibility. I could equally make an argument for the banning of orange juice - those evil cocktails laced with vodka are quite easy to drink and before you know it, bang, you need a new bottle of Russia's finest

Lower the age for the consumption of beer and wine to 16, and allow 16-18 year olds in pubs/clubs until midnight. Seems to work quite well in Germany, they just ID everyone on the door and give the 16-18 year olds wrist bands, then random spot checks inside.

Re: Alcohol purchase age increase..

Problem is (if you see it as a problem) the UK has had this drinking problems (compared to many other contries) for years.

Not sure how well this is known, but this was talked about of a radio program with a historian some time ago.

They talked about "Drinking Clubs" where men used to go to get plastered and staggered home (pretty much like today) albeit these were not where you would find kids.

The govennment of the day tried to do something about this "Then" UK Drinking problem and over a short time these Drinking Clubs were transformed into what we now call "Pubs" to try and make them a more family oriented place to go.

Seems like we've had this problems for a long LONG time.
