Re: Burglar Alarm

Get one from a NACOSS approved, BSIA registered company.

I would recommend a national company, like the one I work for, as you will get a system that is appropriate for the premises not, a system that comes for a set price and therefore only has a certain number of detection devices.

National companies will also be able to offer you an annual service contract, monitored system etc, all tailored to how much you want to spend.

Also you will tend to find that if you go for the above, regards NACOSS and BSIA then your insurance premium will recieve a discount too.

Re: Burglar Alarm

if ur on a budget and the walls have yet to be plastered just get a hard wired alarm, will work for years without any expensive problems, and get it serviced yearly to keep the insurance people happy (can also fit a pager device which will notify a few numbers of choice that the alarm has been triggered)..... unless u drive a ferrari, own a rolex and have bags of cash for maintenance.... then option above....

nice one

Re: Burglar Alarm

Had one installed a year ago..

Cost around £600 fitted (2 bed apartment), with a telephone dialer thing...The alarm make is Scantronic. So when the alarm goes off, it'll ring the numbers programmed in (upto 6 numbers i believe). Its obviously hooked up to the telephone line.
Our apartment is on the top floor, so all wires were hidden in the attic.

You can go wireless, however these are slightly more expensive and more maintainance (changing batteries in sensors)..Also, was told there was more chance of them going wrong..Whether thats true or not - i don't know!

You could go even more expensive and have it call/notify the police/security, but there is a monthly charge which can be pricey..

Re: Burglar Alarm

Must admit that hard-wired is preferential but, the new Radio Frequency equipment is very good and depending on what you need can work out at the same price as hard-wired often cheaper in my experience.

Any service agreement should cover the cost and time to change batteries in the case of RF equipment, however they usually last (in the case of equipment I use) for approx 18/24 months, as the detection incorporates power saving during high activity so, the need to do that is minimal.

Regards monthly costs, £25 for twice annual service and monitoring 24/7 to the police should you require it plus a 24/7/365 phone number for support, not bad in the grand scheme of things, especially when things like BB and Sky TV cost the same, if not more.

Re: Burglar Alarm

It looks like it is hard to get a price without having someone round for a quote. Anyone work in the industry know what I would be paying for a simple alarm system?

Re: Burglar Alarm

I got the bt wireless alarm, it cost about £100. It was very simple to fit and it phones you texts you and emails you if it goes off or if the batteries are low etc. It will also alert other numbers if you dont reply yourself..

Re: Burglar Alarm

it shouldnt cost more than £350 max for a wired alarm, the components cost pennies.... u could get the alarm bell box, seperate number pad, pir's, wiring and control panel for less than 80quid the rest.... depends on the alarm engineer

from experience they just wanna come round, and sell u wireless system..... just find the smallest ad in the yellow pages eg one man band local alarm fitter, tell him,her what u want and they should understand straight away....

u chose a 'firm', u pay 'firm' prices...and if the alarm guy is experienced he will favour wired everytime, unless you've just fitted that solid oak flooring

nice one
