Ping in matchmaking reduced!!!

As stated in the title one of the Epic team, specifically joegraf as added a server side fix for Gears 2 to decrease the maximum ping for people you are matched with from 200 to 175. This should further help getting less laggy games

You can read the somewhat muted announcement he made here:
*DLC Horde ( Playlist Change - With Proof )...Sneaky EPIC* - Page 5 - Epic Games Forums

I don't know why he didn't start a specific thread for this tweak as the benefits to the community could be huge.

It could mean a lot less of those really bad games, the full effect though will be dependant on your region. For the US and EU I think it will be a good tweak. There are rumours of further tweaks coming but no confirmation yet on what they may be.

Re: Maximum ping in matchmaking reduced!!!

A start, but not enough to make to go back to it.

A game with 175ms ping will still be a lag-fest. I think you need to get to 100ms before it becomes acceptable.

In theory that would be a great idea but what about people who live in regions where there are few players. 100ms is the sort of ping someone from Scotland might get to London, they paid there money so they should have the right to get a game too. When combined with the region preference filter this little tweak could make a significant difference.

I would love a 100ms limit as the game would be perfect for me, unfortunately this would cause so much grief for other players I'm not sure it's fair.

That would be very extreme circumstances!

Re: Maximum ping in matchmaking reduced!!!

But GoW2 matchmaking is so boinked, or it was up until Title Update 1 when I gave-up on it, that I'm not even sure a 50ms ping would sort it.

Prove me wrong.

Thats what I thought then I ran speedtest on my Dads connection and it got 88ms from North Yorks to Maidenhead. Needless to say I'll be sure to dump his current ISP as soon as possible because that is attrocious. When I consider mine gets 26ms and I live round the corner from him that is terrible and highlights how crap some ISP's can be. For the record he is on Aol but it was never that bad until after they were bought by the Carphone Warehouse, hopefully I'll get him moved across to Be Internet in the near future.

Re: Maximum ping in matchmaking reduced!!!

I've just run a couple of speedtests to find my ping across the world.

Canada is 117ms which isn't bad considering how far away that is, but Frankfurt is 138ms. That explains why German matches are always so laggy I guess. Australia was so bad it isn't worth mentioning, so hope you don't get matched with a ausie.

Ireland, where I believe our Xbox Live servers are located, was a reasonable 48ms which for a 400mile trip isn't bad.

Re: Maximum ping in matchmaking reduced!!!

Thats bad for australia! That would be over congested links and bad routing equiptment doing that.

Data travelling at the speed of light should only take 21ms to get to autralia over a fiber optic connection.

Speed of light = 299,792,458 meters per second / 13 840 358 (meters to autralia)

= 21.66ms (i think!)

That's the issue we're up against, terrible routing. The biggest delay though can be simply from your house to the exchange and from there to the fibre backbone (assuming you're running ADSL).

Re: Maximum ping in matchmaking reduced!!!

OZ was ~500ms and the connection was 0.19mb up and 0.13mb down.

The speedtest nearly crashed in the middle because it was taking so long.

I just retested and although it is bad, it's much better.
