Create Gamertag, Join XBox Live Gold as mentioned and you have a month's trial. When it expires, you can create another gamertag, then repeat again.
This only works on a new console three times although when I sold my old Pro console I just did it twice from new so that the buyer would have a month for themselves.
Also you could use the 48 hour Live trial cards that often come with games, including Fable II and Gears of War II. They're reported to be in Modern Warfare 2 but my copy didn't have one.
Gold Live isn't for everybody, as some people find they hate the immature, racist, homophobic and just spiteful behaviour that can sometimes be encountered in MP matches. Not to mention the cheating, abusive text messages, abusive voice mails, being kicked from game lobbies just because they don't know you, etc.
At the same time, online MP has changed my gaming life and I've made a lot of new friends. Like I say, you can test the water without committing to a year to see what you think.
