Thanks: Gave 0, Got 0 | PAL Gamecube Plays Black & White! HELP!
We have a PAL Gamecube which only plays in Black and White. I have a newer Magnavox/Philips TV and a new Magnovox MDV437 DVD player. What must I do to restore color to our colorless gaming?? Help!!
I've read the other threads which discuss these matters, but I'm unsure if I need a SCART converter or can I run the GC through my DVD somehow?
Thanks for any ideas anyone has out there! We're going through withdrawls!!!!!!!!

Are you in the US? If so, your display probably can't handle PAL.
Does your TV have component video inputs? That's the only cheap way of resolving this without buying extra kit (apart from a Wii component cable but they are inexpensive).

Hey Steve,
Thanks for your help. We're in the US. TV has just the three VGA jax, the yellow/white/red and a cable connection.
The DVD player has a component video input though. Would that help?
Should I buy the official Nintendo RBG cable?
Many thanks!!!!!

Hi
Doesn't necessarily have to be the official one, but it is known to be better than some of the cheaper ones.
Just to clarify - your TV definitely has a set of three sockets coloured red, green and blue? If so, you are good to go.
The cable is called a component cable though not an RGB cable. I don't think the RGB cable is available in the states anyway as it is only really useful for european TV's with a SCART socket.

Hi,
The TV has yellow, white, and red sockets. Yellow for video and red and white for audio. The DVD player has the red, green, and blue, in addition to the yellow, white, and red.
I'm just guessing (hoping) that I could somehow run the Cube through the DVD and then to the TV, but I'm grasping at straws.
Thanks again!

No, afraid not...
What other connectors does your TV have on it?

The only other connections are for cable TV and for power. That's all.

No good then I'm afraid. I've never come across a TV with so few inputs!
Your best bet will be to get a PAL>NTSC transcoder - something like this.

Hi Steve!
I took your expert advice and bought the converter...it just arrived yesterday! Good news? The games work! YEAAAHHH!!!
Bad news? The color is waaaayyyy too bright. It's like playing Mario on some controlled substance.
Any advice now? I have adjusted the color, tint, brightness, and picture as best as my TV allows for. It's still day-glo-neon color all the time.
Still, kudos for your advice...we appreciate it so much.....
(here's me driving my mariokart again... )

It is just possible that your converter is faulty... I'd have a chat with whoever you bought it from.

I bought a second hand gamecube on ebay to play rogue squadron on a panasonic th42px80 plasma but I am only getting a black and white picture from the analog cable plugged into the component port. Do I need the digital cable or is it another issue? Would I better plugging into a scart socket with a converter?
thx

Do you mean composite or component?
What does the cable you have look like? Which socket on your TV are you trying to connect it to?

I have plugged the analogue cable into the gamecube and into the component on the plasma. It is yellow, red and white leads. red and white went into audio in.

thx | YOu need the component cable for component video and composite cable (yellow) for Composite or via scart adapter.

You could try forcing 60Hz (albeit PAL), by holding down the B button on the controller when turning the console on. The TV might (I say might) be able to decode the colour in this mode.
