Post GameCube to do 5.1 - how..??

CVG report that GameCube's Star Wars Rogue Leader will have a full 5.1 soundtrack. They go on to say that Lucasarts will soon announce just how this is going to be done..I'm intomgames and movies big-time...but I can't fathom out how on earth they are going to do this..There's no DD decoder built into GC and no optical out (that I know of)..any ideas...I wouldn;t expect this to be a b***s**t report...

The GC won't need a decoder, if it's the thing creating the signals. It will need an encoder though, to package the channels, and will almost certainly therefor, be equipped with an optical out.

The GC apparently has a dynamic DD encoder, which allows it to create sound in 5 seperate channels (plus discrete sub-woofer channel).

The difference between it and PS2 is the way it's channels are packaged to the outside world. It'll be designed to accomodate 5 (discrete) channels instead of the usual 4 (matrixed). It'll then be sent out in a 5.1 bitstream for your amp to decode again.

PS2 just matrixes its 4 channels into 2, and sends them out via the scart L/R, or optical out.

The GameCube has a proprietry digital AV out, I would bet that it presents itself as coax at the amp end.

according to Nintendo Japans website the Digital out is only for picture, with Component and D connector leads available at launch, the site states that an av cable must be plugged in to get sound..I;m not being argumentative, but I am really keen to find out exactly what the score is..

Maybe but component and 15pin VGA are analogue, DVI and SDI are digital.

I would be surprised to find RGB mods for it soon, my N64 was RGB modded when i got it, and that was only a couple of months after launch. (and yes i know this is a bit contrary to my other post. <img src="biggrin.gif" border="0"> ).
