How to trade Pokemon on gold & silver on GB advance

My son & daughter each have a GB advance. They are loading gold on one & silver on the other. Consoles are connected via a link cable.

They get a message "other person not ready" all the time.

Any ideas please?

TIA

I don't think non-GBA carts work over linking on GBA/Sp console
