Siemens Gigaset S685IP Problem - HELP

Hi - Im only posting in desperation as Im about to throw my relatively new S685IP out the window.

I have VOIP.co.uk for incoming calls and justvoip for outgoing calls. Everything was working fine until today when outgoing call via justvoip mysteriously stopped working. After I dial I can't hear anything in the siemens (no ringing or anything) but the number dialed still rings but they can't hear anything when they answer (and I can't hear them) - so it sounds like a completely dead line.

I've checked and justvoip is still showing as 'registered' when I connect via the computer and none of the settings have been changed since it has stopped working. I've also logged onto my justvoip account on my laptop and was able to make a normal outgoing call using a headset. Finally I topped up the voip.co.uk account and sucessefully made an outgoing call using it.

So in summary Im very confused because
1. The settings of justvoip have not changed on the phone and it shows as 'registered' - i.e. not a problem with my settings
2. Im able to make justvoip calls via the computer - i.e. not a problem with my account
3. Im able to make outgoing calls when the settings are changed to allow outgoing calls via voip.co.uk - i.e. not a problem with the phone.

If anyone has any ideas I would really appreciate it or I'm going to get the bigger 'I told you so' from my gf who just wanted to keep the tech simple in the house!

Thanks

Re: Siemens Gigaset S685IP Problem - HELP

After spending a very frustrating day on this, I've established that it is not just justvoip which is having this problem but ALL the betamax companies (smslisto, voipcheap etc.). There is just no audio either way when I make a call

However, when make outgoing calls with voip.co.uk or sipgate it works fine.

Can anyone help or is this a dead forum?

Re: Siemens Gigaset S685IP Problem - HELP

Me too got the same problem. Was breaking my head to find out where the problem actually is. I was able to use the softphones downloaded from betamax sites. So I assumed (I believe they also use the sip protocol ) that as they worked, it is the problem with my gigaset s685ip and tried updating the firmware. But didn't help either.
I am glad to hear that it not out harware but the betamax servers is the culpript. But I don't think they would ever fix it as they are notorious for not responding to any kind of contacts. What I am planning is, I will finish all the remaining balance using their softphones and the will switch to someone else. Will try sipgate(though not that cheap).

Re: Siemens Gigaset S685IP Problem - HELP

Good to know that I'm not alone. I posted on a few forums about this but there doesn't seem to be much help out there regarding VOIP hardware and (as you say) betamax dont provide customer service.

The only reply I have got is from the thinkbroadband forum <http://forums.thinkbroadband.com/voip/f/3620370-anyone-know-anything-about-siemens-gigaset-s475ip.html>. Im not at home so can't try this at the moment.

Please let me know if you come up with anything. Although there are other providers out there (Im now using voip.co.uk for outgoing calls), betamax is the cheapest

Re: Siemens Gigaset S685IP Problem - HELP

Hi there,

I had the same problem with my siemens a580ip phone in combination with voipcheap.

did a lot of digging and in the end I found the g.722 codec to be the problem. Once you remove this one from your list, everything will work.

Don't know what the problem is with the g.722 codec thought Siemens recently released the new firmware version, but maybe betamax made some changes as well??

Cheers,

jan

@ sliding doors: is the g.722 listed (on top) for calling with sipgate and voip.co.uk?

Re: Siemens Gigaset S685IP Problem - HELP

I got the only the option 'audio' checked from that list. Over my head, the g.722 codec and another ones (not remembering... I am at work) are not selectd. Later I tried just selecting g.722 as I saw this option selected when I tried to use sipgate.co.uk and their manuals showed this option selected for gigaset 685ip. Still it didn't work. Also I am getting unregistered error for sipgate(may I need to pay £5 to activate my account.. IGNORE THE SIPGATE section which is irrelevant to what the real problem we got.). Today or tomorrow, I might find a way to reset the gigaset and then start from scratch adding my voipcheap accounts.

I saw on the other post that 'gunnersboy' got the voipcheap.com still working. Which may be correct as it is probably a different sip server located in USA. To me, I think, it is the european servers got this problem.(Ahh.. THOUGH, DON'T WANT TO BELIEVE , perhaps our gigaset is the one to blame ) .

I will keep posting any developments.

Re: Siemens Gigaset S685IP Problem - HELP

@ Mark:

The problem is the g.722 codec, I'm sure of that. I don't get why you try using it anyway. Sipgate doesn't support it afaik.

If you log in to your siemens base and then click on settings / telephony / audio.

On the right there's a section called voice quality. First click on optimized for high bandwidth. This selects all codecs and sorts them from best to worst quality. Now click on own codec preference and select g.722 and then press the remove button. Do this for each connection.

Now it should work. If it doesn't register then you have a different problem.

If you can read German then have a look at this posting about it:

SparVoip mit Gigaset S675IP: Höre nichts mehr - IP-Phone-Forum

Cheers,

Jan

Re: Siemens Gigaset S685IP Problem - HELP

Thanks Jan1973 - you were right the problem was with G.722 . I've spent hours on this and can't believe it was simple as pressing 'remove' on one of my codecs (I knew I should have learnt German rather than Spanish at school!)

Just in case anyone wants to know, this only seems to be a problem with betamax groups as I've still got G.722 selected for both sipgate and voip.co.uk and both work fine.

Although it doesn't really matter now I wonder why it suddenly stopped working - possibly something to do with the update?

Anyway thanks again Jan1973 . Usually I can find answers to my tech questions without posting on a forum but there does not seem much of a community regarding the Gigasets. Without your advice I would have been stuck with the more expensive VOIP providers (and worse - a lecture from my gf about how we should have stayed with skype! )

Re: Siemens Gigaset S685IP Problem - HELP

@ sliding doors: you're welcome!

the german forum is quite good - but there's a betamax forum as well:

forum.voipbuster.com

Although the forum administrators aren't betamax employees - you can find a lot of betamax related stuff there.

Cheers,

Jan

update 22-04-2009:

betamax has fixed this issue and you no longer need to have the g.722 codec removed to be able to make calls

Re: Siemens Gigaset S685IP Problem - HELP

Hi all. Got stuffs working. it was still not working for me. One of my friend who got some experience in voip phone told to suspect your router. The nat will be causing this. So I thought my tiscali router might have done some firmware updation and that caused my sip phone fail. So I replaced my router with my old linksys router(which I am quite sure didn't update by itself as it was left aside).. and bingo... it worked.

Hope this helps you all.

Thanks a ton!

Thank you very much for the tip jan1973!!

Even though I am reading this thread about a year and a half later than the latest post, you advice is still as good as gold.

My problem with a Siemens Gigaset A58H phone has disappeared.

By the way, I am using 12voip (yet another Betamax variant) and, opposite to your latest post, the G.722 codec is still NOT fully supported by Betamax.

My problem started yesterday night (6 October 2010) and until this morning that I read your post, I was unable to make outgoing calls with the Siemens phone. Let me add that I did NOT have any Siemens firmware update over the last month and nothing of importance changed on the rest of my computer or internet modem/router (no firmware updates, no driver installations etc.).

So, to you all out there, be aware that jan1973's initial advice on removing the G.722 codec still holds and you should try it before switching to some more expensive internet-telephony provider.

cheers!
