sipgate, phonerlite, vista laptop & poor quality audio? HELP!!

Hi there,

I hope someone can help as sipgate are being a bit ... err ... not too forthcoming with the support / suggestions!

I've got a sipgate account, and have installed the phonerlite application on my vista laptop - using a bluetooth dongle & plantronics headset.

When i make a call, the audio quality isnt great, have been told it sounds very 'distant' (like a half-decent sat' phone according to my bro) ... using it throughout the course of the day, it got a little worse and sounded crackly and with some echo.

I am fortunate enough to have access to several (3) wireless networks, home, office and a customer site, i get the same problems on all networks so assume its local based (ie, my laptop or the phonerlite app)

I have configured it using the settings from sipgate's page, on my home router & office router, set the ports 5060 - 5062 on 'tcp/udp' to be forwarded to the router itself, all codecs are ticked within the application, and set to use udp as the connection method. - i've tried using tcp too.

during a phone call the connectivity speed is approx 13kbps and I understand it should be quicker than this - which then i think this is the cause of the poor audio quality. what's confusing is that this is happening on 3 seperate networks!!!!

any help or suggestions would be gratefully appreciated )))

cheers,

Dave

OK at 13kb you are will be using a narrow codec see if you just select g711 is it improves. G711 is basically the same quality as an ISDN call.

Wireless networks can play havoc with voice as they will often transmit in bursts and can increase latency which is very bad for voice. Check you network card settings for QOS as well. I have known vista QOS to really mess with VOIP if it is not configured right across the whole network.

Sounds like it's the routes that sipgate are using. Usually quality issues can only be dealt with by reporting them to your carrier, then the carrier does a test call to check quality, and takes appropriate action (ie. route to 2nd choice etc). So i reckon it could be your provider having IP quality issues.
Also, I would think the software would be able to automatically switch between low and high quality codecs.
