Using a UK set up ATA Adapter Abroad

I have set up a Zoom ATA Adapter for my dad and it works brilliantly.

I'm using AQL and at £2 a month it suits because he spends half his time away from home and the phone number he got is very similar to the phone number we grew up with.

I emailed AQL and they said it would be possible to take the Zoom adapter abroad and so when anyone dialled his uk number it would still ring wherever. My dad has a holiday home in Spain so i wondered about him getting broadband in his holiday home and just taking the Zoom with him when he went.

Has anyone actually done this?

How was it in terms of quality / latency.

Thanks in advance

If the broadband in his holiday home is a good quality service (which it probably will be) then there will be no difference to him using the ATA box in Spain or the UK. We use ATA boxes in the UK and many african countries. The only factors to consider are that due to the nature of IP traffic and the calls being routed through different carriers, there might be some call quality issues as IP traffic can have many problems. i.e. network congestion.

Re: Using a UK set up ATA Adapter Abroad

I actually live in Spain. I moved here from Ireland where I was happily using my Belkin Router and a Sipura ATA to acheive VOIP. I brought everything with me. Needn't have! The router suplied by Telefonica is SIP configured. You just have to adjust the appropriate default settings via the wizard. [192.168.1.1]I have a 3Mb connection and I'm usually getting 2.56Mb down. Needless to say I make a lot of International calls to both landlines and mobiles. The quality is superb. The only real drawback is the price that Telefonica charge for their landline rental+Broadband connection, which due to Non-Competition is about TWICE what we were paying in Ireland. All the more reason for VOIP. Currently I'm subscribing to POIVY but have also used VoipCheap and VoipDiscount. They're actually from the same parent company but have different rates - I just keep an eye on those rates and migrate accordingly
