Looking for VOIP Solution - Help Appreciated

I am looking for a Voip solution/provider to give me the following:-

Free Outgoing UK calls to uk landlines and freephone numbers (need free phone to access conf call services at work)
Incoming phone number (doesn't need to be local but would help)
Some method of connecting phone to my router rather than having my PC on.
Would prefer not to use a Dect phone so need either a box to connect my RJ-11 phone jack to, or a phone which will connect to my router.

I have considered Skype and Vonage but hardware seems limited on Skype, and although the HW is cheaper for Vonage it is tied to them, and also their fair use policy could be a problem.

I have looked at SIPgate and their hardware looks good but they dont seem to have an exclusive package for outgoing calls.

Help appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Looking for VOIP Solution - Help Appreciated

I would be surprised if anything is TOTALLY free, there is always a fee. In my case as I work from home most of the time all I did was upgrade my BT line to Anytime for £5 per month, £60 per year.
I end up with standard reliable quality line calls and not some dodgy VOIP service.
Even the likes of Tiscalli etc offer anytime calls etc with cheap packages.
By the time you purchase all the kit etc it would take a long time to get your money back. And if things change just revert back to a normal service subject to 12 months contracts etc.
What you need to check into is the actual number you need to dial, if a standard national number then the calls will be free with anytime services, if some 087xxx number then I would doubt if any service would give a free call.
I based all my workings on the fact I will be saving petrol driving into a office.

I dont mind paying a monthly fee. I have a Virgin Landline but dont really want to tie it up for work during the day as the wife /kids wont be too happy hence the reason looking at VOIP.

Have a look at the Tesco Internet phone service. I got rid of my Virgin landline and have used Tesco VOIP over Virgin Broadband exclusively for nearly 2 years. They have very cheap call packages ( I haven't bothered because I don't call out enough to make it worthwhile as 01/02 calls are only 2p/minute anyway). Fully itemised billing which goes back literally years and free Voicemail which again doesn't disappear (unlike my Virginmobile phone!). I got a local phone number and was able to pick my own numbers (from a specified range). I bought a phone adaptor from Tesco - now discontinued but you can get them on ebay - example
Tesco IPA 1000 Internet Phone Adapter on eBay, also, VoIP Internet Telephones, Networking, Computing (end time 12-Dec-08 23:56:28 GMT)

Edited to add

Tesco specifically allow business use of their call packages - interestingly Virgin specifically disallow business use of any of their home services including broadband

That is because Virgin does not do business circuits (one of Branson's stipulations), their sister company NTL:Telewest Business does. Same suppliers, same network, different name!

Thumbs up Re: Looking for VOIP Solution - Help Appreciated

My VoIP is via a Thomson Speedtouch 716 ADSL router which I got free...yes, FREE from Digidave.co.uk. Offer looks as though it's still open and now wifi as well! See: Digidave.co.uk

My ISP is VM Cable. The cable comes in from the modem and my analogue (but not for long) phone plugs in, as can the landline phone line if you want both available.

Setting up is a bit fiddly - I edited the massive 'user.ini' file to get mine going but Digidave are helpful. My VoIP provider is sipgate who also provided a separate home-town phone number as well as cheap calls and good service.

Hope that helps.
