After having a conversation with my wife 16 hours ago we've both connected to skype but neither of us can see the other one online.

Is this our problem or is there a wider problem with the system?

have you tried to add her again into your list?
i have seen this problem, but the other one is with question mark, but still in the contact list.

i suggest you read the manual and it might help you. Have you checked the id you are trying to connect or either have a faulty internet connection. Usually skype is great even in low bandwiths.
