Want an hd pvr in time for world cup

What are my options please?

I have looked through various threads but most seem to refer to products not yet released.
Equally I have searched online retailers and not yielded any.

Thanks

currently none have been released, but as above, the Pace/Philips box should be out this month, as well as the 3view box.

of the two, i think i'll be going for the philips box.

Thanks. So to summarise, nothing released yet that fits the bill.

Are there any reviews of the one linked?

Why on earth are they all cutting it so fine before the world cup?

they would be making a fortune if these were out now and advertised properly

Have Humax got any plans for a HD PVR to be released before the World Cup?

My old 9200T is on its final legs and needs updating.

Yes, it's been mentioned on various review websites and if they've got any sense I would think by the World Cup. But as it's been said all manufacturers seem to be cutting it fine.

It was exactly the same 4 years ago with SkyHD in time for the world cup. I ordered within minutes of the release and still get my install for half way through the world cup. At least this time ITVHD is around because last time watching BBC HD and then suffering ITV SD was like going back 50 years to B&W TV.

One point though BBC World Cup coverage was simply stunning back then and they haven't repeated anything like it again. I guess it was still new to them at the time, but their quality has steadily "declined" since, I guess while they get the balance between "value" and bandwidth.

Thanks for the replies. I'm not really fussed about 3View and would prefer a Humax STB over other manufacturers.

Have seen this on the internet but cannot seem to find anything else about the Humax HDR-FOX T2:-

I'm 4 miles from Winter Hill, excellent freeview reception, and it seems that I've been waiting forever.

I saw the Digital Stream 500gb for sale from John Lewis, 2 year warranty, which meets my requirements. It arrived this morning and set up without problems.

I'm busy today, watching the Cup final this afternoon on HD. If anyone has any questions I'll try to answer but bear in mind I'm not very technical.

Thought you were set on the 3View box

They all mostly quoting end of May as probably all on the same boat from China, lets hope it doesn't sink.

I've become increasingly interested in this box and it has a 2 year guarantee at John Lewis.

Any comments you have, technical or not, would be welcome as there are no hands on reviews for any of the Freeview HD-PVR's.

I've downloaded the manual but there doesn't seem to be a function for padding timers; is that correct?

Not sure what is meant by padding timers.

I was looking forward to getting a freeview hd recorder, but the delays made me reconsider whether to bother. I hadn't decided on any make, Digital Stream was one on my list, it seemed that all the 500gb would be about £300, and there was no way I'd preorder the way the delivery dates changed and definitely not from Comet. If people don't get them for the World Cup then they may wait until Xmas. Will prices go down? Who knows, and we may get a VAT increase soon. There is always a risk with new technology, but it looks as if the manufacturers are allowing for updates with the internet links.

So far I'm happy but not tried the features yet. There is a delay when you change channels, not sure about the red lights on the fascia, I think a matter of getting used to anything new. Style wise, its a black box, nothing special, and I prefer to look at the tv screen. It comes with a user's guide plus quick start leaflet plus re-tune leaflet, and when you switch on there is an installation wizard, so caters well for nontechies like me.

Should I have waited for all the expert reviews to come out and all the boxes in the shops? No, I don't think there will be much of a difference between them, and I've waited long enough.

Hi,

Means you can add minutes to the start and end of programs as "Accurate Recording", IMO, doesn't always work. The "Sagemcom" PVR's do have it but you loose the "Series Link" option.

Most of the PVR's are very similar as far a spec goes and until they have all been reviewed it's down to personal choice as to what make to go for.

This is on my list as was the "Pace/Philips" box. The only other ones are the "Toshiba" and "TVonics" as they have additional HDMI outputs which could be handy.

This is the first to be available so hence the interest and prices are sure to go down later in the year. As you say the only thing you have to watch out for is the forcast rise in VAT!

A bit off topic, but a good point recording HDMI connections. With DVD Players, games boxes, Blu-ray players, an HD PVR in addition to other PVRs like Sky etc, Toshiba have seen how having an inbuilt HDMI splitter could certainly be a selling feature.

However HDMI switches are now pretty cheap, auto switching and self powered off the HDMI cable and I find this works an absolute treat Neet® - 3 Port HDMI AUTO SWITCH 3x1 Mini Hub Box 1080p: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo and with HDMI being all digital, it has absolutely no effect on the picture quality

Regards

Phil

Hi Phil,

The extra HDMI option isn't a deal breaker and thanks for the splitter info but might get lynched if I have more cables trailing around .

I'm now unsure about the "Digital Stream" unit as there seems to be one or two issues with it as described by jon smith in his post.

Mainly series link including repeats and recorded programes reverting back to the start after part watching.

Think I'll sit it out a bit longer.

Well hopefully a few of us early adopters (and probably mad to be) on the Philips/Pace model can start posting about how good or bad it is in a few days time.

Just emailed John Lewis to see if they are to stock the Philips as they normally give a 2 year guarantee.

Eager to hear your report and where would we be without you brave pathfinders

Hi daveh48

I emailed JL around 10 days ago and according to their reply they will be selling the Pace/Philips and expect it to be available middle of June.

Interested to hear what they are saying now.

Thanks....I'll post on here when they get back to me

PhilipL is expecting his from Amazon around the 18th but he's had it on pre-order, I checked delivery today and it's June 3rd onwards so JL looks a good bet if they offer the 2 year guarantee.

Also Richer Sounds have added the Philips Freeview box to thier site so most likely they will be stocking the PVR too and I've always had excellent service from them.

I got a reply from JL customer services this morning and it stated they didn't know when it would be available on the website and advised I contact a local store.

Like most companies customers services they are either the last to know or just pass the buck.

Hi dav

I emailed/got a reply from the Oxford Street branch.

Maybe they are working to different time scales.

Sagemcom RT190-500 T2 HD

Hi folks! Anyone know if HD recordings can be copied (via USB) from the Sagemcom HDTV twin tuner hard drive to an external hard drive?

I have a Western Digital TV Live Media Player and would hope to be able to save stuff to play the (1080p?) Sagemcom HD recordings through it... ?

Or... can any of the other Freeview + HD boxes meet this requirement... ?

You may find in the future that, even if you can, you would need to play back through the original box. There are some sneaky copyright protection features that could restrict you.

One thing though, your Western Digital box would be to some extent redundant as such playback seems to be a common feature to the more up-market boxes.

Since this ability does seem important to you, when you purchase it, confirm that whatever box you buy has this feature and make it absolutely plain that you are purchasing it for this purpose. If practical, record the conversation or confirm it by email. If you then discover that you have been misled, you can get your money back.

I have a sneaking suspicion that Comet and Laskys are one and the same.
