Manual Retune Winter Hill

Hi
New to all this but picking up loads of useful info from you guys.
My problem concerns manual tuning to pick up BBC from Winter Hill instead of MyP. Following suggestions here I reset my box & did a manual scan of channels 56, 62, 63, 66, 67 & 68. No problem at all until I try to scan for CH 62 (BBC). It shows zero signal and zero quality – NOTHING ! - I've always had signals from Winter Hill before – what’s happened to them? I thought the signal had been greatly increased. Any possible solutions or ideas ?

Many thanks for your reply. I have read the thread but have a couple of Q's.

Can you explain in simple terms why, with a manual tune, I can't get BBC from WH but can get it from MyP.
Why does there seem to be a problem with BBC from WH but not a problem with the other channels from WH.
Sorry to be a pain.
Thanks

There could be two reasons

1 The increase in power for mux 1 might be overloading your tuner front end. Try an attenuator

Or 2 more serious

The change of mux A to 64QAM using the 8k transmission mode, if you have an older tuner it might not be 8k compatible if so you need a new freeview box

Note on the 2nd December two more mux will also change to 8k working

You say there is no problem picking up BBCA mux from MyP. This transmitter has already completed switchover on this channel which is 45 and increased power to 16KW. It should also be on the new 64QAM 8K mode so that can't be your problem.

It's possible, I suppose, that the Mux 45 is still held in your tuner. Did you do a complete rescan of channels with no aerial connected to clear out the old tuner data before you did a manual scan?

Note also that MyP is due to complete the dso tomorrow, 25th. November.

Freeview on Moel-Y-Parc TV transmitter | ukfree.tv - independent digital TV + switchover advice, since 2002

Is BBC Northwest listed on your equipment on Channel 800 and 801?

You could also, after clearing out old data from the tuner, try an autoscan leaving out the aerial until approx passing channel 50 then reinsert the aerial.

Thanks guys for your replies.

The spec for the tuner says 'COFDM - 2K/8K FFT mode' so I assume it's OK with 8K.

I did a complete rescan with no aerial attached then manually scanned the channels - but nothing at all on CH 62.

No BBC are shown on CH 800 & 801 (even with a full autotune !)

What is your location? I never understand why new members are so loathe to give their location. It usually helps to pinpoint problems.

My BBC channels from Winter Hill are fine on Mux 62 so it can't be engineering work.

Have you this problem on more than one STB or freeview TV?

Did the autoscan again pick up BBC channels on Mux 45 from MyP?

Can you try clearing the tuner again by scanning with no aerial connected. Then do an autoscan again but leave the aerial out until the tuner indication is passing Channel 50 then re-insert the aerial quickly. It needs to be in to scan the first WH channel, currently 56.

There have been problems with the WH switchover covered on NW Tonight. I was getting BBC 1/2 Wales to begin with did a rescan and it reverted to Granada. They are doing the whole thing again on 2nd Dec 09 so they may have sorted it out by then! More serious I am getting big problems with my Freeview recorder with a lot of failed recordings. Hard to say whether they are connected though prior to 4th Nov 09 it worked fine. Watching the channels live is O.K.

The plot thickens I'm afraid....

Let me briefly recap what has occured up to now.

I live in St Helens and have always received digital from Winter Hill no problem.
I have a PVR tuner which I bought to watch Freeview with a previous TV set. The PVR spec contains the following - 'COFDM with 2K/8K FFT'. So I assume OK with 8K. I now have a new TV set with built-in Freeview. I still use the PVR for watching Freeview as it is more user friendly and I can record easily.

After 4th Nov, retuned the PVR and received BBC1 & 2 from MyP but no BBC from Winter Hill (not even in 800 & 801). I cleared all the channels with the aerial out and did a manual retune for Winter Hill. CH 62 (BBC) revealed no signal whatsoever! All other channels fine.
Later today I cleared all the channels from the built-in Freeview on the TV and did a manual scan for Winter Hill. Received all the channels fine - even CH 62.

The aerial is connected to the TV via the PVR. Both the PVR and the TV use the SAME AERIAL !!! What IS the problem with the PVR?

I live 4 miles north of st helens on top of the hill and can see winter hill and have had no problems with overloading.

I can only think that there might be some software issue with the pvr on 8K so its worth seaching for problems with the make of the pvr.

Just turned my TV on and it had 'found' new channels - including changing ITV to ITV Wales!

I'm in Greater Manchester using Winter Hill!

So did a complete re-turn and ITV now back.

My brother-in-law further away in Stalybridge has lost BBC 1 & 2 on his old Pace Freeview box.

I tried re-tunning it at my house but seme result.

I think Pace have stopped making Freeview boxes and stopped giving any software updates for at least 3 years.

We are waiting until the next change in early Dec - but it looks like he will need a new box.

Cheers, cooperda (daveac)

Its probably in the list of obsolete boxes

http://www.digitaluk.co.uk/__data/as...15_Sept_09.pdf

He will also have lost The remaining BBC stations in addition to one and two.

Thanks for that - you are right - checked his model - Pace DT210F came out in 2003 - 2K only - not 8K

Sorry for the delay in replying - been away for couple of weeks.

Many thanks for the replies.

Still no luck with the PVR. Model is Dual DPVR 801. I'm thinking it may be a software problem but when I try to update the software it does a search and can't find an update - using V4.9

Any help appreciated

Ah DUAL i have dvd/mpeg 4 player bought from asda and i can't find any manufacturer and the innards are simlar to the PACIFIC/DURABRAND DVD players.

So it looks like it's unlikely that will be any support i'm afraid and that is typical of supermarket brands.
