Recording Freeview to VCR from TV with integrated digital tuner

Hi

My mate has just bought a Samsung UE40B7000, LED TV with integrated Freeview. He wants to be able to record Freeview transmissions to a VCR (with SCART input). It looks to me like he will probably have to split the signal from his roof aerial, use a separate Freeview decoder and connect that to the VCR.

However, looking at the connections on the back of the TV, it has one labelled 'RGB ext'.

Is it possible to connect this straight to the vcr, using the appropriate RGB-SCART lead, thus avoiding the necessity for a separate Freeview box?

Thanks,

Phil W

Re: Recording Freeview to VCR from TV with integrated digital tuner

On my Toshiba you can do this, but you have to go into the TV menu and tell it what you are outputting from, so DTV in this case.
BUT.

1. The TV has to be on.
2. You can only record what you are viewing.

So basically pointless. Tell your friend to dump the VCR and get a PVR with built-in Freeview.
VCR quality will be POOR on playback.

Not pointless if you're happy for your TV to be switched on and you don't want to watch an alternative Freeview channel at the same time. A very useful facility.

Thanks both.

Will suggest the PVR as a possibility.

Having looked into it a bit further, as far as the VCR is concerned, it looks like the RGB ext output on this particular telly is video only (ie no audio)..

Does this seem right?

No, you must be reading it wrong.
Both audio and video from it's Freeview tuner will be output from one of the scarts...usually AV2 (EXT2)
