Problem with BBC HD

I've just brought the humax freesat HD box. Now it only came with an HDMI cable and my tv doesnt have HDMI, so I went out and bought a component cable from currys so I could watch HD. Now I've plugged everything in and the menus and stuff look brilliant and clear, but when I watch bbc hd it's in hd for about 10 seconds then it changes automatically back to sd. Where have I gone wrong? thanks

Re: Problem with BBC HD

Is there such a thing as an HD TV without an HDMI input? Surely, you're not expecting to watch HD on an SD TV.

Welcome to the forum

I believe that for some content the DRM is enforced by the broadcaster or set top box firmware thus blocking HD over component as it does not support HDCP (copy protection) which is a part of the current HDMI requirement.
Do you have a DVI input that supports HDCP, I assume it's an old (5 years plus) HD telly and not one of the older SD Toshiba(?) range that had component input.

Re: Problem with BBC HD

DVI is electrically the same as HDMI, as far as video goes - the difference is the plug, and the fact that while HDMI can carry the sound, DVI does not.

If the set has an "HD Ready" sticker, then it should support HDCP via the DVI connection, and all you need is a lead with an HDMI plug on one end and a DVI plug on the other - or an adaptor plug, which fits into the DVI socket and itself has an HDMI socket - something like this one:

Profigold PGP1001 HDMI to DVI Adapter - FutureShop.co.uk

You will also need to make arrangements for the audio, since DVI doesn't carry audio. Many sets with DVI input for video will also have a matching audio input socket, perhaps on a 3.5mm jack, and you'll need to link that to the Humax receiver, or perhaps feed the audio from the receiver to your AV system (which is what I do).

However, none of this will work if your TV does not support HDCP over the DVI input, so you need to google, check the manual, or ask the manufacturer to find that out.
