ITV HD Quality

Is it just me or is the quality of ITV HD sometimes little better than Freeview SD. Im watchoing "Lewis" now and compared with BBC HD "No1 detective agency" its quality rubbish.
Any one else think the same? Is there a reason? perhaps I have a setting wrong.

Re: ITV HD Quality

I haven't watched Lewis but in general I have been more than happy with the picture on ITVHD, it might not be up there with the best hd broadcasts atm but its a lot better than their sd offering

Re: ITV HD Quality

well I guess we should be grateful with any FTA HD channels. How does it compare with your BBC though?

Re: ITV HD Quality

The two shows may have been produced on different hardware with a different style and look, unlike SD there is a huge choice in production techniques and artistic license when producing HD, it's pretty much what a theatrical productions have offered to their producers and directors for the last century and explains why HD movies vary so much in look.

Re: ITV HD Quality

I agree about Lewis last night, thought it was bad for HD. My 15 year old daughter walked in and said that she thought it was poor, it seemed "grainy".
"No1 detective agency" was very good but the material lends it's self to be good. Lot's of sunny outdoor shots.

Re: ITV HD Quality

Yes i agree that the footy has been good. But regarding lewis I really struggled to see a difference between sd and hd versions. I know the production may have a bearing but surely there should be a sharper clearer picture what ever system has been used.
Be nice to hear from someone from ITV who knows?

Re: ITV HD Quality

I saw Lewis the previous week and it was terrible but the problem wasn't the HD system, it was that it was shot out-of-focus! Quite often the important subject was out-of-focus but some other part of the scene was perfect.

Basically, it was very poorly made.

Re: ITV HD Quality

I thought the indoor shots in last weeks Lewis, especially in the interview room, were very grainy.

Re: ITV HD Quality

Makes you wonder why they bothered to do a HD version at all. Maybe they get extra money from ITV for the HD version and nobody at ITV actualy checked the quality
Glad it wasnt just me who thought it was out of focus and grainy.
Only just got my HD receiever so hope its not typical of the channel?

I have noticed the same thing and posted the selfsame query here ITV1 film "About a Boy" hi definition of what?

The ITV high-definition pictures do seem to vary. Some programmes seem to be better than others.

ITV1 film "About a Boy" hi definition of what?
I have just got my new Foxsat-HD up and running this weekend and watching the BBC high-definition channel the picture is superb and very, very noticeably better than BBC Standard vision.
Last night ITV 1 was showing a film "About a Boy" in high-definition, pressed the red button to change to HD and the information showed that the transmission was now 1080I, none of the family and myself could notice any difference between standard transmission and now the high-definition transmission. We kept switching backwards and forwards between the two to check, but they were virtually the same. Has anybody else noticed this? It's a pretty poor standard if this is the norm.
Also had trouble with Channel 4 and their film "I Robot" don't know how to get it in high-definition as there was no option to "press the red button" and a don't know even if have to change to some special channel or not. Any help there please? Must have been doing something wrong.

That's simple, CH4HD is not a Freesat channel being part funded by SKY so while still being free it requires a genuine SKY smartcard in a Videoguard decoder.

1. If the quality of the program recording (by the broadcaster) is not very good then the quality of the picture you will get will be poor. In fact, an HD TV could make a poor picture look even worse !

2. How far are you sitting from the TV screen ? You need to sit a lot closer with HD to get the benefit of the improved definition.
A 40" TV is best viewed from about 8 feet. Google "best viewing distance for HDTV" and you will get lots of info.

I agree with what you say re viewing distance etc but surely the point is why show it on an HD channel (particuarly an occassional one like ITV) if the original source recording is bad
