freesat HDR installation - how many co-ax feeds do I need?

Hi All

I've bothered to read all the related threads but cant see an answer to my query. Can anyone help?

I have a lovely pioneer PDP 427XD plasma chosen on the advice taken from this forum.

I've watched freeview channels on it since we got is as theres a built in freeview tuner.

Now i'm getting the 'your arieal has short circuted' message on startup. Pictures in freeview or analogue are awful or gone altogether. Its probably because the aerial has passed its sell by date. retune sometimes fails to work and its getting annoying

Instead of paying for a new freeview aeriel to be installed we have decided to get freesat so we can see HD telly for once.

Can you confirm how many feeds I need to have it installed as the man is coming tomorrow to price installation of a dish (we have no sky dish).

We are considering the Humax FOXSAT-HDR 320GB freesat Digital TV Recorder (twin tuner), to go with our pioneer plasma. Some reports say this device needs 2 co-ax feeds , others say 3. As we will probabaly run a non HD freesat or freesat+ box in the next room on a smaller lcd tv in future must I ask for 4 feeds (quad LNB?) to cover this.

I dont want to pay for more feeds than is required but want to get it right first time.

ps will the HD freesat box require a better dish and better co-ax cable or is the standard stuff ok?

Many thanks in advance

regards

John

Quad LNBs tend to be installed by default, the PVRs used in the UK need two feeds.
In theory you can fit any tumber of tuners when designing a PVR but in practice there are two - one for watching and another for recording. The specs say two tuners on that model.

Thanks Trollslayer

Is fancy satellite cable required or is the standard stuff ok for an HD box?

Although the installer will know, there is no difference between the signals carrying HD channels and those carrying SD channels, simply the contained data represents one or the other.
That being so, the same dish, LNB, cable, is all suitable for either.
The only pertinent question, should you be living far north or west of the UK, is should you have the larger of two sizes of Sky dish (or the Freesat equivalent), Sky coming in approx 45cm and 60cm.
If you may want to expand your viewing in future by way of additional receivers in other rooms, be sure a quad LNB is fitted (gives you two additional feeds after the lounge/HDR, for eg. receivers in two more rooms) as it is possible a twin LNB may be supplied to only feed the HDR.

Nvingo

Thanks for the input.

The nice guys from the local installers have been to price installation and suggested the quad LNB.

Now I just need to find the humax HDR PVR for less than £300!

Hi John,

Take a look here:
Buy Humax Products Direct from HUMAX - LCD TV - Digital TV - PVR TV - DTR TV - Flat Screen TV - Flat TV - PVR - tv recorder - Personal video recorder - video - television - LGB - DZT - DTT :HUMAX DIRECT Ltd:

Comet also have them for same price but always seem to be out of stock !!!!

Just out of interest, how much did they quote for installation ??

You could always sign-up for the SKY "Pay Once Watch Forever" for £73.40, ask the guy to stick on a quad LNB and extra cabling for a back-hander and use the sky box in the kids room !!!! Take a look here:

FREESAT from Sky - Pay Once Watch Forever - FREESAT from Sky

Cheers,

Hi peter

Thanks for the reply.

complete installation inc. dish/cable/quad LNB and four cable runs (2 to lounge and 2 to kitchen) £175 inc vat.

I think this sounds reasonable. I can then chose the box myself when they become available.

This is a local installer listed on the freesat website.East Sussex / West Sussex border.

regards

John
