Freesat SD quality compared to Freeview

Hello all,

I am thinking about getting freesat. Could anyone tell me what SD quality is like on freesat compared to SD on freeview? Do SD channels get more bandwidth on freesat? Any opinions appreciated.

Thankyou

I have both freeview and freesat Humax boxes and I cannot tell the difference on my Pioneer 50" plasma.

Most of the sky sd and freeview is the same with the exception of itv which is alot better on freeview (and that goes for all 4 of them)ATB PETE.

Re: Freesat SD quality compared to Freeview

Some channels are better for example E4 has a higher bandwidth

Some are worse, really worse like ITV, its like watching through a fly screen door!

The Ch4 stream is worse than skys Ch4 stream due to bandwidth constraints

Basically if you can get freeview the picture is mostly better, well it is from my toppy when I can receive freeview (trees problem)

There is more bandwidth to be had from satellite than terrestrial and so the picture could be much better, but the broadcasters have to put there hands in there pockets for this to happen, which is not likely at the moment!

I have to add that my girlfriend can not tell the difference, but because I’m a nerd it took me about a week to get used to it!

I have both systems I only use Freesat for HD

Freeview SD is better than Freesat SD on similcasts

When the ok was given for Freeview by the broadcasting bosses it was made mandatory that any transmition on it that at the same time was going out on anolog had to be same quality.

So BBC1 BBC2 ITV1 CH4 CH5 will be.

Anything else they can please themselves

With freesat this condition was not made so the above stations take advantage of this and transmit a less quality pic.

Re: Freesat SD quality compared to Freeview

Thanks for all your responses guys. You have really helped me make my mind up. Think I will give freesat a miss right now, I have freeview through a upscaling HDMI PVR and the picture is really good. I wanted freesat for the HD but from what I hear there is not really that much on it and if SD is better on freeview then it doesnt make too much sense to get freesat right now.

Re: Freesat SD quality compared to Freeview

I am in the minority here. I think that my Freesat signal from a Humax box, via HDMI, is better then the inbuilt Freeview on my Samsung 786.
