Sky's reaction to Freesat HD PVR?

I can't see this mentioned on this thread which surprises me but Sky HAVE reacted to the forthcoming freesat PVR:-

I saw an ad in this weeks TV magazine (I think it was) where they are offering the SKYHD box for a single payment, I think it was £199, with no further costs to pay. You get a 3 months free subscription to some sky channels, after which you can either cancel or pay for them. If you decide to cancel, you still get free HD channels (I assume not many!) and you can decide whether you want to pay the £10 per month if you want the SKY+ service (Not totally sure what that £10 pays for as I don't use SKY)

Interesting to see the smallprint that said they cannot guarantee the future availability of the HD channels available to this service, inotherwords BBC HD could get pulled from SKY in the future, but would still be on freesat.

So, there is the answer to the qurestion of this thread.

Of course Sky cannot guarantee the actions of other broadcasters (which are BBCHD, C4HD and Luxe TV presently on a non-subscription STB) but there is no prospect of BBCHD becoming Freesat exclusive (the BBC are fully committed to "platform neutrality" and do not appear to be going to do anything to specifically assist Freesat! - which they regard as mainly for those who cannot get Freeview)

about twenty years ago...i got terrible...analogue signal so i went and got cable...i had everything on the cable menue....and i was paying more than i do with sky now.....ive everything HD broadband phone...(no sport pay channels.)...and i count my lucky stars for SKY.....it,s well worth the money....FREESAT is a waste of time....you can get most of the channels from your sky dish free......if you cant afford the few bob a day...subscription...spend it on booze...fags cheap women ect or what ever your taste.....but stop winging.......please

This forum is for people to let steam off, we have to complain about something, if you are still around in a couple of years time see how popular freesat HD is then compared to Sky, my guess is Sky 50+ HD channels, Freesat 5

Grinnders post was not a whinge it was a statement of fact, for some of us a freesat pvr is the perfect solution for our needs. Yes you can get most of the free channels on a sky box without a subscription but you can't record them without paying sky £10 per month. I personally would rather buy my own freesat pvr (can't get freeview) than pay sky for the ability to record on my own box.

For some people sky is good value for money, to others freesat is the best choice, why can't people just accept that different options suit different people and that neither is wrong

Not available to order yet but they added details for the product a few days ago, so I would imagine it will be on sale very soon

Sky have finally refunded my payments for sky hd, and for some reason they have credited my account for enough to pay for subscriptions until January, so I may wait until the new year to see if the price drops after christmas

I sense that for the majority of ex-Sky subscribers who have paid for installation and a Sky+ pvr the £10 per month fee for the privilege of using the recording facility really sticks in their throats, but there must be some logic behind Sky's policy.
Perhaps, as I seem to recollect seeing sometime ago on this forum, Sky was to remove this £10, the company's pricing policies may appear more attractive to a wider potential audience.
Personally I think Sky offers the ultimate in SD and HD choice but for many, including myself, the cost is prohibitive. In any event my wife and I do not watch all that much television.
As I have said in my previous post, you pays your money and takes your choice. Those who can afford to have the full Sky package good luck to you, but for others, including myself, less choice is quite adequate and fulfils our needs.

That's fine....but Freesat has quite a narrow window of opportunity with people like you! If Freeview acquires a (very!) few HD channels then it is likely to retain the vast bulk of the low-usage consumers.

I was wondering about this.

It seems obvious that feeview should retain the vast bulk of low usage consumers, but there are 9 million plus current sky subscribers which would suggest that at least 10 million homes have a satellite dish.

Given that the aerials on most houses are pretty old, if decent freeview reception requires a new roof top aerial that probably means that freesat offers the most cost effective option for a lot of people
