Humax Foxsat HDR keeps switching to 1080i

I've had my Foxsat HDR for a while now and have been using it with the output permanently set to 1080i.

I recently got a new Philips 47PFL9664 TV and the scaler in the TV does a much better job with SD than the HDR, so I've toggled the V-Format back to 'original'.

However after a while I've noticed that the Foxsat is setting the output back to 1080i again. I can't think why it would be doing this and it seems to hold the 'original' setting for a while, but two or three times now I've checked and found the output back to 1080i when watching SD material.

I'm running the latest firmware.

I did a factory default reset today to see if that helps...but any suggestions would be welcomed!

So nobody else has experienced this then?

Surely it would cause problems if your TV wasn't capable of supporting 1080i? Or is something in the loop (Audiolab 8000AP) being 'clever' and deciding that 1080i is supported and the best resolution?

My Samsung plasma reports 1080i all the time if the Humax is set to original. If SD material were being output in 576p then the screen would blank when switching from SD to HD, as the screen switches mode, but it doesn't. My old SKY HD box would do this if set to Auto, but it was a pain so had it on 1080i all the time.

Thanks for the reply.

My HDR is definitely outputting 576i for SD content and switching to 1080i for HD. The TV reports the correct resolution and it blanks when switching.

You can really tell when SD is being upscaled to 1080i by the HDR as well as the colours become over-saturated and the upscaling isn't anywhere near as good as Philips implementation.

Interestingly I don't get the 576i option when scrolling through the v-formats. I only get 576p, 720p, 1080i and orginal. Somehow 576i must be suppressed which is presumably why 'original' doesn't work for me. Mystery.

Some screens do not support 576i over HDMI (mine doesn't either), so you do not get the option.
I can do 576i over SCART or component.

In this case, original will always give you 1080i, since 576p is not considered "more original" than 1080i.
(so we have to manually switch to 576p to stop multiple up/downscaling)

Just checked the manual and you are quite correct. Presumably the SKY HD box works slightly differently and auto swtiches 576p and 1080i. TBH I cannot tell any difference whatever setting it's on.

My TV supports 480i, 60 Hz, 480p, 60 Hz, 576i, 50 Hz, 576p, 50 Hz, 720p, 50, 60 Hz, 1080i, 50, 60 Hz, 1080p, 24, 50, 60 Hz, 1080p, 24, 25, 30 Hz and the HDR allows me to switch between 576i, 576p, 720p, 1080i and original.

It's still switching to 1080i all the time!

I had another look last night and noticed that both SD and HD were set to 1080i. Then set SD to original and HD was still 1080i. I noticed that I could set this to original as well (which is still 1080i), so I now have both SD and HD set to original. I wonder if this might make the original setting stick...

I have the exact same problem, no idea whats going on, my box switches to 1080i automatically after a few minutes regardless of what I set it to.

I've also got an issue that my foxsat won't allow me to upscale to 1080P through my amplifier. The set won't find the input yet manages easily when I use the blu ray. I've checked the cables and I know there all capable of delivering 1080P. Any ideas whats going on here?

BTW whats the latest software version.

What's the amplifier model. Most won't scale hdmi inputs, basically they just pass the video on untouched and extract multichannel sound from the data stream. ie 1080i in 1080i out. 1080p in 1080p out.

Looking at the manual it looks to be the same as my Denon. Only the analogue inputs can be scaled (cvbs, s-video and component). Digital video input on the hdmi ports are simply passed to the output without any video processing.

Some advice please:
Recently got the HUmax Foxsat HDR with a Philips 42PFL7404 - How can I change the settings so the tv does the upscaling of SD content, but the HD channels from the box still come through in 1080i?
I also like to have the box set to 1080i as the menu's etc look so much nicer, and the resolution and screen format fits perfectly with the set in unscaled mode. Any thoughts?
I also have a large problem with the box set to 1080i (the setting I want to have it on, because I feel it gets the most from the box and the picture - even SD looks pretty sharp) after a few miutes of watching a channel, set in 1080i, HD or otherwise the screen goes blank for a few seconds then comes back - does that a few times within 5 minutes, then the fault seems to get worse, green flicking occasionally, then the left side of the frame starts violently flicking green and the whole picture moves over to the left, very strange. Apparently some sort of HDCP issue but ive checked all the settings, all seems fine, I believe it may be some sort of compatability issue with PHIlips sets and the box, anybody else had a similar problem? It upsets me resorting to watching it in 576i no point in having it in my opinion. The picture looks splendid when the box is set to 1080i. The fault seems to be more magnified when watching a HD channel. Connected via HDMI provided with Humax box, perfectly adequate for the job according to Humax.

Any help or thoughts please? Been looking forward to my new set up for a while, now sad that it doesn't seem to be performing as it should

Thanks, Simon

Change your V Format setting to "Original" - this will use 1080i for HD, and 576i for SD, allowing your TV to upscale.

but... the overlays (menus, etc) will be at the resolution of the currently selected channel - ie: SD res unless you are watching BBC HD or ITV1 HD.
If you think about it, it can't work in any other way - the menus appear on top of (merged with) the picture, and only one resolution can be output.

Cool, thanks for the advice. Will give that a shot.
Do you think this should remedy the other issue I was having? I believe I have had it set to original at some point before, yet the screen blanking I mentioned still seems to occur.
Thanks, Simon

Sorry to reawaken this thread, but I have just got a foxsat and have this problem too - it's not as bad as yours, seems to just do it once a minute or so after channel change, and I think (but need to confirm) that it only does it when connected via my av receiver, and not when direct to the tv...
Also, I cant seem to find the setting to change the output resolution now, tho I'm sure it was there!! Can anyone point ms in the right direction?!!

Did you manage to resolve this?
