Unhappy Help installing free sat, PLEASE!

Hi all, newbie on here, we're trying to install a Philex free to air satallite kit.

It is showing the signal to be at 70% but the quality at 0%.

We did manage to get some channels but they were all foreign or scrambled. Does that mean that we have the dish set up properly if we got some channels?

When I choose the astra 2 sat dish and search no channels come up. I have done everything the manual says, the only thing that is confusing is the transponer list I have to choose from. Its giving me many choices some like

10972 27500 V
10976 22500 H
11011 27500 V

Can anyone help me?

You are pointing at the wrong satellites. Type in your postcode here and choose Astra2 at 28.5E for an exact google earth line to the satelites you need at 28.2/28.5E and the elevation and skew settings.

No you can zoom right into your house and see the exact direction. The dish will normally have a scale to set the rough elevation as detailed in the table that gives you azimuth (Direction) elevation (up/down) and skew (the twist angle for the lnb)

I managed to do my noob installation (eventually) after a load of wisdom from the good folks on here, a good look at the direction of dishes near my house - and a cheap satellite finder with an old mobile phone type charger.

Where I was going wrong was in having the face of the dish pointed too far upwards - it is now very nearly vertical (ie parallel to my house wall). I was also surprised how strong the signals were from the 'wrong' satellites (ie not 28.2 East.

good luck

19E is at least as good as 28E.

Hi all,

I am now tearing my hair out! I've tried moving the dish slightly and it still isn't picking up the sat. I know its pointing in the right direction as have checked on the map thing. We've tried going up down left right, still no channels. The signal is still at 70% and the quality is at 0% Is the quality causing a problem or does that go up when I actually have a picture?

Sorry about this, but surely it can't be that precise! Trying to pick up the satalite? If I need to pay someone to come and do it for me, it will defeat the purpose of cheaper tv!

Thanks
Bebe

The quality is the most important parameter it shuld be as near 100% as possible (it's a measure of the amount of error correction the tuner needs to resolve the digital data at 0% it can't read any digital data) . A minute error means your dish will miss the satellite by miles (0.5deg is about 230 mls at geosynchronous orbit altitude - 73.6Km for 1 tenth of a degree to be precise). Most people who try and align a dish the first time shift the dish look at the box see nothing and move it again. The tuner takes a while to respond so be patient. Set your dish to the approx the right elevation using the scale (it will be very near vertical). Point it a bit East of the line and move it West in tiny bits waiting each time you move it. You should eventually find a signal for 28.5E keep going until you find the sweet spot. Carefully lock off the bolts securing the azimuth. Now repeat with the elevation. Lastly set the lnb skew in each step maximise the quality.
