Freesat HD newbie

Hi

As a member of the family recently passed away I have a spare dish which SKY told me to take and keep.

Now I'm intrested in setting up Freesat HD in the bedroom.

Two simple questions

What's the best HD box out there for picture quality etc, I won't need and PVR functions, just a straight box.

When I put the dish up on the side of the house next to the livingroom SKY dish, how will I know where to position the dish to get signal?

Many thanks

Trist

If you've already got a $ky dish up on the wall, odds are you'll have a quad LNB (the thing on the end of the arm on the satellite dish), or maybe a dual one.

This will depend on the $ky box you have. If you've got $ky+ functionality, you will have two cables coming down from the dish. Just check to see if there are "ports" on the LNB for further cables.

You should be able to connect your Freesat box directly to the LNB on the same dish as $ky, providing that you have free ports available on the LNB, which will be much better than having two mini-dishes stuck on the wall!

If its not a quad LNB, you can pick these up fairly cheaply on e-bay - or you may have one on the new dish that you have acquired, and you could replace the one on the existing dish. A quad LNB basically means that it has connectors for 4 x cables to go into the LNB.

The Freesat website keeps a good track of the equipment that is available: http://www.freesat.co.uk/index.php?p...dqtrahae1qk8a5

It might be worth having a look on there, and possibly picking one that takes your fancy, and then ask on here what that specific model is like (or search the forums for it).

The Humax range of products does have a lot of fans, and they are reliable, with good picture, but there are cheaper models available, that you might want to consider if you're on a budget.

Thanks guys. Have been looking at the Foxsat :D

The dish on your house and grans house is only a single feed LMB.

SO I can buy any quad LMB on ebay and it'll just fit?

It's an LNB ("Low Noise Block") - yes you should be able to buy a quad and fit it to the existing dish. However, depending on how old your dish is, you have to be careful with the type of adaptor for holding the LNB.

Take a look on: Satcure satellite dish LNBs digital TV aerial information
or:
Satellite systems, satellite dishes, Satellite Superstore UK, satellite advice, training videos, Low prices.

Both sites have lots of information, and will point you in the right direction, and their customer service teams will be able to help too.

If you don't want a PVR, a second hand Sky+HD box is your best bet. You'll get BBC HD, ITV HD and C4 HD.

You'd need a £20 Freesat from Sky viewing card too in order to get C4 HD.

Stiggy,
I asked this elsewhere, does the Freesat from Sky card enable you to watch C4HD (and indeed E4HD) in HD or do you need to subscribe to an "HD" package"? The FAQ on their web site baldly says "no, you have to get a Sky HD box" but that implies they are referring to the SD box package sold separately.

Award-Showcase
It gives you C4HD and does not give you E4HD which is currently a Sky subscription channel.
As it is "free" - actually £20 for the card - it obviously does not need you to pay anything more, for HD or for anything else, but also of course you need a Sky HD receiver to use the card.
