Upgrading to quad LNB

Hi there,

We're having our satellite dish replaced after a storm even as I speak and they are taking the opportunity to upgrade the LNB to a Quad LNB. I know I need to do a Factory Reset on the Foxsat to force it to recognise the two LNB inputs rather than the one and loopback that we currently have, but will this mean we lose the recordings we've already made?

I realise it's a bit late to be asking this question when men are already on the roof doing the setup, but if anyone can reply quickly, particularly Lord Graham of satellite knowledge , then I would really appreciate it.

It's quite likely that we'll do it anyway, even if it does mean we lose all recordings, but I'd rather not if we don't have to.

The Foxsat is switched off right now, but as I recall we're on v7.52 of the firmware I think?

No need to worry you won't lose any recordings.

You will lose your recording schedule, the box will revert to indattl defaults (notably the volume reverts to 50%) and any non-freesat channels you may have added.

Thanks Graham, and in fact when you do a factory reset it tells you you won't as well. There seems to be a worse problem now though. I checked we were receiving TV through the Foxsat okay, switched off, plugged in the new LNB cable and the old one removing the loopback, and now we're stuck on the finding satellite signal step! It goes around and around and when you hit stop it says no signal was detected, however the engineer plugged both cables (one at a time) into his reader gadget and they both work fine, we were watching BBC1 on it. The signal strength on the new cable is a lot stronger at 70 dB - the old one is at 61 dB - but the engineer says it's still within norms that go from 60-74 dB. He tried putting a splitter onto the new cable, which reduced strength to 61, the same as the old cable but still no joy.

Worse still, we unplugged everything and put back the old setup, the old cable and loopback, which was working fine before the factory reset and now no signal can be found from that either.

Help!

A guess is that the dish is not correctly aligned (perhaps because the extra weight of the lnb has caused the lnb arm to sag slightly more), to set up freesat it requires access to Eurobird 1 at 28.2E, the engineer is reading the signal from Astra 2D at 28.5E from which the psb channels like the BBC are transmitted from.

If you skip the freesat install goto manual tune and dial in transponder

11427 H 27500 2/3 and look specifically for signal quality.(this where the epg comes from)

I don't see how to skip the auto-tune? Because I did a factory reset it comes up with the wizard screen before anything else.

It turns out it was a problem with the new head. The engineer didn't spot it at first because everything seemed to be going okay, but the Humax was picky enough to refuse its signal, and with your obvious expertise he was able to find the problem. He's coming back next week with a fresh LNB to try out.

Thanks again for your invaluable help as always Graham.

For future reference if you keep pressing next through the freesat setup and finish at the end, then press OK to enter Setup and choose manual tune you can then look at the signal strength and quality of any transponder you choose. Basically you are using the box then just like any other generic free to air sat tuner.

I couldn't though - it would get to the find signal stage and only offer "back".
