BBC iPlayer On Freesat. The Future!

I have set up my TV to be able to watch BBC iPlayer on it via my broadband router, two Devolo Homeplug Adaptors and an Ethernet connection to my Humax Foxsat box. It's great!

In other rooms in the house I have two cheapie Bush Freesat HD boxes from Argos but I note that they too have Ethernet sockets in the back which are marked as for "future" use in the user manual.

When will it be possible to hook up Bush boxes (or any make which has an Ethernet socket for that matter) to watch iPlayer on TV?

They are doing "brand" roll-outs of the i-Player.

According to the joinfreesat.co.uk site, they've posted something today to say that Harvard brand e.g. Bush, Grundig, Goodmans will have it on or around the 16th March!

Any freesat HD box should eventually work. The early Harvard SD boxes had ethernet ports. These will never work (no mpeg4 decoders)

communication from freesat

I spoke to freesat about the Bush HD box and iplayer upgrade today (25/3/2010).

They said that the Bush / Goodmans / Alba boxes are next to be upgraded and "should" be upgraded by the end of March, or at the latest 1st week in April.

The nice chap there also said that Panasonic upgrades will soon follow.

ITV Player is looking to be added by late spring / summer time.

Hope this helps

Matt

Very good news! Only drawback is I'll need to buy two more Homeplugs!

Have a look at these home plugs - 85mbps Twinpack

Extra Value 85Mbps Powerline Adapter Twin Pack - PRICE ENDS TOMORROW - Ebuyer

Not bad for £29.99 ! But price ends tomorrow (Friday)

Also note that 85/11Mbps are incompatible with 200 Mpbs homeplugs.

Hope this helps.

I understand though, that both the Beeb & FreeSat recommend the use of HomePlug AV adapters (the 200Mbps version). The 85's do work, but perhaps 1 of the reasons for the recommendation is because the 200's are 'future proofed' , i.e. they will interlope with new/forthcoming HomePlug compliant adapters unlike the 85's which, as you correctly state will not. Also the 200's are designed for HD streams, whereas the 85's tend to prefer SD.
The reason for the 85mbps versions being at such a good price, is that these units are pretty much "end of life". All of the manufacturers are focusing on the AV 200mbps versions at present, which have become the new "standard" for the Homeplug market.
