Question TV with Builtin Freesat able to show Freeview?

Hi All,

I have searched all over but can't find an answer to this.

I have been offered a cheap LCD TV with Freesat built in (LG LF7700) from a family friend. But I don't have a sky dish and living in rented accomodation, paying for one to be installed seems a waste of money when it is a rented property.

Does anyone know if I will I be able to just use this TV for the bacis 5 channels through a normal aerial or will it not work at all without being connected to a Freesat connection?

Also, if it can be used for basic connection without Freesat, I can then connect a Freeview box to it or does the built in Freesat stop this?

Just don't want to end up with a TV and not being able to even get the basic 5 channels on it because it was freesat.

Thanks for any help in answering these queries.

Welcome

According to the LG website (always a good place to look) the 7700 range has in addition to the Freesat tuner a Freeview and Analogue terrestrial tuner.
Of course the analogue or Freeview will only work with a suitable aerial and reception in your area.

Are you quite sure?

I couldn't see that the specs of the 7700 range on the LG or John Lewis websites mention any tuner other than Freesat - nor did a couple of reviews I found.

In fact, but for your post, I would have concluded that this range definitely did not have any other tuner.

check out this site:
LG 42LF7700 review from TechRadar UK's expert reviews of Plasma and LCD TVs

The Setup menu changes dynamically, so you can only tune terrestrial TV if you're already in Freeview or analogue mode, Freesat in Freesat mode and so on. [quoted from the above website]

Are there any large screen TVs sold that don't include a DTT tuner as standard?

Not seen a one yet which isn't the same as being able to say definitively there are not

If they are classed as a TV rather than a monitor (for the business market) then the absence of a DTT tuner would be shocking, not surprising but shocking.
Freeview has been so standard that it's omission would be in the same class as not including a analogue tuner over the last 40 odd years

Yep, while the 7700 details on the LG site are incredibly brief which I really do not understand you can access the support for the model and the manual which then covers the auto-setups for the freesat, freeview and analogue tuner modes.

Well that review has a glaring error it says you need to use an english postcode to get ITV HD - that's rubbish. Never seen a new TV these days that does not have the digital tick mark showing it has a freeview tuner.

I thought I read a Scottish postcode prevented the ITVHD interactive from being enabled thanks to the issues with STV however a Welsh postcode is ok.

All postcodes get ITV1 london on local channel nos 977. In addition to the audio description you also get red button mheg access to ITV HD. A scottish postcode gives you STV at 103 but you still get ITV1 london at 977

You're quite right, of course - the manual makes it clear that the 7700 has analogue & digital terrestrial tuners, as well as Freesat. In fact, this is what I thought would be the case until I looked at LG's spec. I can't agree that it's "incredibly short" - fully expanded there are about 70 items - & I'm inclined to regard it as downright misleading. Even more surprising to me is that John Lewis, also, mention only the Freesat tuner.

you are spoilt for choice ! 3 tuners

Picture quality is stunning on this tv, especially using BBC/ITV HD feeds from Freesat...

Thanks for that mate.
Coincidence! I'm still using my JVC amp bought from Richer Sounds in Edinburgh...in 1986!
