Is second-hand worth it?

Hi all, complete newcomer to this, so please bear with me! I currently have Top-up TV, but am in a weak signal area. I could upgrade the aerial, but that will cost around £100 looking at various sites. I'm thinking of going Freesat+, but it looks fairly costly (£250 for a recording box - which it must be), plus dish and installation.
I was wondering if buying a second-hand box, and a dish kit from that well-known auction site is worth it, or should I bite the bullet and get new? I'm willing to have a go at diy dish installation.
