How to Decrypt .ts Files

Hi,

I have a few BBC HD .ts files from my Humax Foxsat HDR. I am able to copy them once to an external device (an ext2 usb).
How to I then decrypt them and convert them to another format (MPEG-2 preferably as it is quickest and then I shall convert using Mac OS X 10.6.2 with Turbo.264 HD)
(Transfer to the computer is done with Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit)

Thanks

Fred

Re: How to Decrypt .ts Files

I'm presuming these are encrypted because you recorded them from Freesat Mode (non-freesat mode doesn't encrypt them).

The bad news is you can't, they are encrypted using a key unique to each HDR - you have to play them back on the HDR they are recorded on. You can play them back on that HDR directly from USB drive, though, thanks to the new software update.

Re: How to Decrypt .ts Files

Les, I see someone brought up an old thread the other night
referring to ITV HD on Freesat...it went back to June 2008, mate.

It was understandable you thought it was me they were referring
to when you mentioned STV/UTV in your post.
I couldn't believe it when I saw it lol

So, if I've got this right, it is completely impossible to decrypt the hd .ts files once they're off the HDD due to the copy protection? Is there no way to do this? I have a few HD videos that I've already recorded and put on my USB drive so I won't be able to go back and record 'em in non freesat mode...
Is there no way to get the decryption key data from the foxsat to accomplish this?

Of course you could put them back on the PVR they came off and play them into a PC with HDMI and capture them
Not sure how to do this but I can't see why it won't work.
Or perhaps just record them in SD

You can't do this (record in HD using HDMI that is). HDCP will stop the hdr sending a 1080i HD signal to any device with hdcp that does not handshake it's a display and totally refuse to send to a non hdcp equipped dvi/hdmi port at all. As a result there are no devices that can record from hdmi (PC's only have hdmi out not in), it's only possible to record HD using analogue component connections so the only way to archive encrypted HD in HD is to convert HDCP hdmi to analogue component and record it on a suitable recorder (The hauppage pvr for instance). There's no problem in archiving in SD to a DVDR though and thanks to the new firmware you can even now do it using rather good quality RGB.

Most stuff on BBC HD will get repeated at some time anyway.

When playing HD recording does it not come out on the phonos ( composite? component ? ) on the back of the Humax. Seem to remember my recordings did and were quite good quality, although not HD I suspect.
So if the requirement is to only record the prog in question then this may be a route. If however the requirement is to record it in HD then I guess that's a problem.

When I mention PC HDMI I was more thinking about a HDMI capture type card if they exist. I found
Blackmagic Design: Intensity
which claims capture/playback

No HDCP though so a hdr won't talk to it.

It would be illegal to use one I imagine.

OK must try my composite/component output tonight as I am sure the Humax played HD recordings and they appeared on this. Obviously not full HD.

Some confusion here, the hdr does not have component out (YPbPr) it does have composite (composite video blanking and synch - CVBS) the absolute worst form of quality connection as it combines luminance and chrominance onto a single connection creating cross modulation video artefacts. The next step up is S-video which keeps the two signals seperate. The best quality SD output on the hdr is RGB at 576i from the TV scart. The non recording HD box does have component out but it does not function for HD material. Early Sky HD boxes do have HD component out but it's now removed on newer boxes.

Thanks Graham, composite looked OK to me but then my eyes aren't perhaps as good as they were !
I've finished on this topic now. Normally I just save them in SD to avoid the problem.
