advice for Foxsat HDR external drive please!

Hi,

Not wanting to void warranty and install a 1tb replacement HDD yet, i thought I would buy an external enclosure.
I understand i need to format to EXT3 for the foxsat since I would like to be able to archive BBC HD and other SD. (i have a windows PC but also a linux laptop so should be no probs)

However, I have two trains of thought im pondering for this "stop gap" situation:-

1) I have a spare 3.5" 160gig Sata drive in my PC which would come in handy for a 3.5" sata enclosure. I guess a switch would be a good idea so i could turn it off easily in situ.

2) Just buy a 2.5" USB drive which works off the 5v USB supply (perhaps 250gig). (will this turn off in HDR standby??)

Any thoughts or advice for me??

Either should be fine and yes the hdr turns off the usb power in sby. I have used my hdr with a 250gB usb powered medion drive without any issues. Most sata drive caddies have a switch.

Why not use one of these

S35DC Docking Station 3.5" & 2.5" SATA Hard Drive USB2 & e-SATA w/ eSATA Adapter

You can then drop in any sata drives you want, you can also copy off your archived HD to a bigger drive using USB and a PC by simply moving the caddy to a PC (using the high speed esata connection if your PC has a socket) and also this allows EXT3 under windows

Thanks Graham,
I value your suggestion, and i might well sub-archive to the PC aswell which does have an ESATA socket on the back but I will more likely have something that sits at the side of the HDR 98% of the time and that piece of kit will look a little ugly on an open glass LCD stand.

I understand ESATA is much faster (for secondary transfer to the PC) but what's all this I read about the foxsat not "releasing" a USB hard drive properly?? Would I have to connect the enclosure to my linux laptop and perform some kind of action before XP would see the HDD?
Does Esata change this scenario?
Thanks for the link to EXT2FSD, (I think I understand that's a driver for windows reading ext2/3)

The new driver for windows solves the hdr not unmounting the drive problem

Graham I purchased two S35DC Docking Stations from Allcam on your advice. However, neither will work using eSATA but both work using USB. I've tried using the eSATA ports on my expansion card (which has eSATA, SATA and PATA ports) and also the card supplied with the docking station.

Have you got any suggestions please?

Is the esata port on your PC working according to device manager ?.

Mine work fine using sata or usb.

I bought a S35DC Docking Station plus a Giga Byte drive.
The Humax is connected to my Sony TV with the docking station plugged into the Humax USB.
All works well.

The only problem I have is that I pipe another video source into my TV on a separate TV input ( none Humax ).
Originally this was virtually unusable because of interference. I tracked this down to the USB caddy. If I unplug the caddy from the Humax USB the interference disappears.
So now when I want to watch my other video source on my TV I have to unplug the USB from the Humax.
I note that the USB cable from the docking station to the Humax does not have any suppression ferrite rings. I could get some from Maplin and try them but am not sure how effective they would be.
So I live with unplugging the USB

So just beware !

All sorted working perfectly. It was the cable I initially used.
