| AVF Editorial Manager | Toshiba Product launch 2009 Advertisement Want to Advertise?![]() Toshiba Product line up for 2009 AVForums attended the Toshiba product launch for 2009 which was held at Brooklands on Friday the 13th of March. The products most likely to appeal to forum members were the new LCD screens announced to start arriving in shops in April. Toshiba were also showing some concept products slated to arrive in 2010, including a Net Player and Cell powered TV. Taking a look at the full TV range first, there are the following announcements;
We think you will agree, that is some line up of products heading our way, but be aware of the entry level models (AV61 series) as these are ODM models which are designed by Toshiba but built for them and don’t include the usual processing built in. These models are designed to a price point and aimed squarely at the Supermarket shelves. But for just a small increase in price, the AV63 series is the true Toshiba entry level boasting full processing technology such as Resolution + One omission from this years line up are the picture frame TVs which the company were sad to stop, but explained that line was just not cost effective. In its place they have announced a new top model in the guise of the SV LED series. The XV, ZV and SV ranges will all incorporate the new M200HD system, touted as true 200Hz performance, but it isn’t! Like Sony’s motionflow film modes in its latest projector’s the Toshiba M200 tech uses dark frame interpolation to create the feeling of smooth motion. As always we will reserve judgement on this system until we can run our own tests, as the demonstration material was all horizontal panning material. M200HD Technology ![]() We have yet to see what diagonal and vertical movements will look like with this processing. These models along with the RV series also feature the companies ‘Metabrain’ processing technology which incorporates features like the ‘auto view’ sensor. This is similar to other TV technology produced from the competition which measures the room and lighting conditions and adjusts the TV to suit. Auto View Technology ![]() And as with every other technology like this I ask just one question – “If the TVs were calibrated for D65 and the HDTV standards, with day and night settings, it would sure save processing power for features like this that just cannot be consistent or natural for images!” Mentioning calibration and accurate images; when the Product managers were asked about ‘Greyscale’ (white balance) and 3D CMS (Colour management system) control for achieving maximum picture quality at film and broadcast image standards, there appeared to be a lack of understanding as to why that is important. Obviously as we strive to help the industry understand these issues and the importance of imaging science and calibration for a growing number of enthusiasts; we are sure that Toshiba will work with us to meet these important standards for our members. Anyway I digress….. Dolby Volume ![]() The next piece of new technology - and Toshiba are first to market with this on their TV range (XV, ZV and SV models) - is Dolby Volume. As explained in the video footage from the event, this system monitors the volume levels of TV content and makes sure that, unless it is deliberate within the content, sudden changes in volume are defeated. This allows consumers to set a volume level and any loud adverts or trailers are suppressed by the technology to stay at the right volume, but it also tries to keep dynamic range. The demonstration was interesting and of course this is already available on some AVR’s, so it will be interesting to see how effective it is on consumer TVs. SV Series LED TV ![]() And finally we come to Toshiba’s flag ship model the SV series. This is the first LED backlight TV from the company and offers local dimming technology, rather than the cheaper and less effective side illumination Edge lighting used by some of the competition. Sadly this first dip in the LED water does not have full RGB technology, but rather white LEDs which need to cover the entire gamut. Of course there are arguments to which is the better technology, but we are looking forward to seeing this TV in our review room for full testing. Net Player - No Pictures allowed! ![]() Before we wrap up, it was interesting that Tosh wanted to give us a preview of two new technologies for 2010. These were the Net Player and the Cell TV. You will notice that there is a distinct lack of any Photographs or video of the Net player, as the PR company banned us from taking any. However, think about what a typical DVD or BD player looks like, such as the XDE500 but with some fancier front panel design and you already know what it looks like. This player will allow the streaming content from a PC or the internet to be shown on a consumer TV along with internet widgets. There were no details of just what services will be available when the player arrives, but we were shown content from ‘FlickR’, ‘YouTube’ and some weather and headline news features. The unit on show also had a built in DVD player and supports WiFi, Ethernet and is DNLA compliant for streaming content. The company were a little sheepish when asked for firmer details on what exactly this type of product will bring to the market, and of course, if it would support the BBC iPlayer. It is expected that such a unit would cost under £200. And then we move on to the Cell TV. Using a processor jointly developed by Toshiba, Sony and IBM, it offers features like continuous recording or streaming of up to eight HDTV channels (all in HD) at the same time or even 48 SD channels. It will also offer a unique interface with moving menu designs and is touted as the most powerful TV ever…but is it needed? One interesting side line for the Cell chip and one that wasn’t really covered at this event, is the ability to upscale full HD content to 4K2K panels, like that shown at CES. Maybe that is where the Cell processors future is more likely to be with TV technology? So that wraps up our coverage from the Toshiba launch for 2009 and you can watch our video coverage with interviews here. Oh, and one last thing. It appears that the wounds of HD DVD and HD disc devices in general are still yet to heal for Toshiba. Yes, once again there was not one hint of them joining the Blu-ray camp, indeed they were very keen to stress just how small the BD market is and that DVD is still king. Isn’t it strange how attitudes change? Come on Tosh, join the HD disc future. Here are the press releases and images of the products announced…… Calibration details in post 13 Last edited by Stuart Wright; 23-03-2009 at 7:23 PM. |

| AVF Editorial Manager | Re: Toshiba Product launch 2009. Toshiba Launches the New REGZA SV Series – the Most Advanced REGZA LCD TV![]() Toshiba UK today crowns the unveiling of its biggest ever REGZA range with the launch of the new REGZA SV series – the most advanced Toshiba LCD TV model ever to launch into the UK market. The new REGZA SV series is aimed at consumers who demand the best in LCD TV technology. The range is the first-ever to combine Toshiba’s Resolution+ technology, Active Vision M200HD picture processing and an LED backlight – delivering extremely high quality images to satisfy even the most demanding of viewers. Available in 46” and 55” sizes, the new REGZA SV range features a premier version of Toshiba’s new ‘Deep Lagoon’ design theme, which sees the exterior screen sitting flush with the front of the TV frame. The effect is created by a Full Crystal Panel that sits over the front of the TV, creating a unique design effect while also improving contrast and colour ratios. The frame itself is a stunning gloss black with gradual colour gradation fading to white on the outer extremities to create a tapered effect. Advanced imaging technology The SV series is Toshiba’s first ever UK model to include an RGB LED backlight, providing an increased colour gamut to deliver striking, vivid images. By utilising local dimming functionality, each panel will be able to provide brighter highlights and deeper shadows by intensifying or dimming backlights in corresponding areas – enhancing the viewing experience with stunning quality images with highly accurate colour reproduction. The inclusion of an LED backlight also offers dynamic contrast ratio of 2,000,000:1, with 10 Bit processing creating a palette of over a billion colours to completely eliminate banding. As with other high-end Toshiba models in the 2009 range, the REGZA SV series is powered by the new MetaBrain engine – a single chip solution capable of managing a number of innovative technologies simultaneously, including Resolution+, Active Vision processing and Toshiba’s AutoView feature, which accurately measures room conditions alongside content to provide the best possible picture performance. Toshiba’s Active Vision M200HD compliments the LED backlight by combining 100Hz technology with intelligent backlight scanning to create ultra smooth motion flow. Images are broken up into specific segments and black sections introduced into intermediate frames, which are quickly refreshed in tandem to provide efficiently managed, fast-moving images with no image judder. The implementation of this technology ensures that images are sharp and smooth, regardless of whatever is on display, with results far superior than conventional 100Hz systems. Combined with LED backlighting technology, Active Vision M200HD provides Toshiba’s clearest, smoothest picture to date. The SV range also features Toshiba’s Resolution+ technology, which is designed to be the bridge between a standard definition source – such as a digital television broadcast or DVD – and the HD resolution screen. The technology works by using a powerful processor to review the adjacent areas of an image, picking out similar waveforms and combining pixel information to enhance edge detail within the picture. The result is a sharper and more defined image, much closer to high-definition standard. Integrated Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) technology allows users to network the SV and pair it with their PC, enabling access to the PCs functions and storage using the TV’s remote control. DLNA technology makes it easy for consumers to share content with friends or associates, even when the PC is in use by somebody else. By simply using the remote control, hard drive storage can be accessed seamlessly, creating the possibility for consumers to view photos, videos and music at the touch of a button. The innovative AutoView functionality enhances image quality by measuring room conditions and content in tandem and adjusting the image appropriately. Both natural and artificial lighting conditions are taken into account and constantly analysed against the actual content being played, meaning that images are always suited to immediate room conditions. In bright conditions, for example, AutoView will darken the backlight to the optimum setting for the surroundings, while in dark conditions the panel will be lightened without affecting overall colour reproduction. Intelligent audio The new REGZA SV series also launches as one of the first-ever TVs to include Dolby Volume, a highly intelligent audio technology that ensures that audio levels remain constant across all types of content, programmes and inputs. The inclusion of Dolby Volume – a first by any TV manufacturer - means consumers will now be able to change the channel without having to adjust volume levels, while the higher audio levels normally employed in advertising commercials will be controlled automatically and maintained at the levels set by the user. Dolby Volume also ensures that depth of sound is retained at low volume, ensuring that no intricate detail is ever lost, with audio remaining deep and clear at all times. Dolby Digital Plus technology also provides instant compatibility with existing Dolby Digital sound systems. Connected Both models feature full 1920x1080p HD resolution panels, providing full support for HD broadcasts and pre-recorded HD content. Toshiba’s Game Mode feature is also included within, ensuring gamers do not suffer potential controller response lag by providing a dedicated link between the console and the TV. 1:1 pixel mapping ensures that all content is correctly displayed on screen as intended, without any information loss at the outer edges. The 4xHDMI inputs within the SV series also feature InstaPort technology, which significantly reduces the delay when an HDMI source is accessed – ensuring content appears on the screen immediately as the HDMI input is selected. A dedicated PC Input also allows users to connect to personal computers, and the new SV series is also capable of MP3 audio and DivX video playback via USB. DivX content can also be upscaled using Resolution+, with further support for flash media also extending to SD memory cards, allowing consumers to instantly view JPEG images from a digital camera. The complete REGZA SV range features an integrated Digital Tuner as standard, allowing users to access digital TV services such as Freeview without an additional set-top box. A full power-down switch is also included, allowing users to completely switch off their sets without relying on standby. Toshiba REGZA SV series – top-line specifications

| AVF Editorial Manager | Re: Toshiba Product launch 2009. Toshiba Combines Innovation, Design and Affordability with the Launch of the New REGZA RV Series![]() Toshiba UK today announces the launch of the new REGZA RV series – a stylish new range of Full 1080p HD LCD TVs featuring a new MetaBrain engine and Toshiba’s award-winning Resolution+ upscaling technology. The REGZA RV series delivers a range of new innovations that offer true user benefits at affordable price points. As well as the inclusion of Toshiba’s acclaimed Resolution+ technology, the RV series is also powered by the new MetaBrain processing engine, providing high quality image performance with both SD and HD video sources. RV series models are available 32”, 37” and 42” screen sizes, all of which offer full 1920x1080p resolution panels for full HD support. The launch of a 32” model is also the first time that a 1080p panel and Toshiba’s Resolution+ technology have been available together in the 32” sector. Each model is styled in a classic gloss black, with slick colour gradation to white at the lower front panel, just above a subtle speaker grille. All models also feature an energy-saving Eco-Panel that runs at a lower wattage than regular LCD TV panels. The inclusion of Eco-Panel technology ensures that energy consumption is kept to a minimum, without effecting performance – ultimately saving consumers money on energy bills. MetaBrain – the intelligent image processor MetaBrain is the new processing engine for high-end models in Toshiba’s REGZA LCD TV range. A single chip solution with a number of capabilities, Toshiba’s MetaBrain engine powers multiple technologies simultaneously, including Resolution+, Active Vision II picture processing and an innovative AutoView mode that allows consumers to enjoy optimum picture settings, regardless of content and room conditions. Originally launched in 2008, Toshiba’s Resolution+ technology is designed to be the bridge between a standard definition source – such as a digital television broadcast or DVD – and the HD resolution screen. The technology works by using a powerful processor to review the adjacent areas of an image, picking out similar waveforms and combining pixel information to enhance edge detail within the picture. The result is a sharper and more defined image, much closer to high-definition standard. Interesting that the MetaBrain processor has made it over here. It's been in the Japanese models since around 2005 if memory serves.

Interesting stuff However, I am confused by one part of the piece which sais, "Sadly this first dip in the LED water does not have full RGB technology, but rather white LEDs which need to cover the entire gamut." But then later, in the assumed Tosh' ripped garb, states "The SV series is Toshiba’s first ever UK model to include an RGB LED backlight..." David/Phil, perhaps one of you could kindly clear the above up? Is there more than one type of RGB system i.e partial or full or is there a mistake in the review? Cheers. |

Ok some clarification. I have it back from Toshiba that the SV LED uses white LEDs the press release is wrong. Also in terms of calibration, from the AV63 upwards the sets will have full white balance and 3D CMS systems. I have attached the details I got back from Toshiba below. Quote:

Wow! Is the new ZV series really coming out in the UK in May this year? If so, think I'm going to cancel my order for a current 46ZV555DB that I placed couple of days ago. Anyone have any idea as to the price for the new ZV series when it comes out? |

The loss of picture frame TVs i.e. the ZF made me incline to buy Panasonic's V10 model instead. Have been using Toshiba branded TVs for years but it's now a good time to change brand I suppose to coincide with the move to flatscreen.
