Server upgrade complete
Over the weekend of 10th August we have implemented a major upgrade to AVForums server hardware.
In July we added a second server for the database. (For the tech-heads there is one server for database selects and one for database writes). This upgrade shifted the bottleneck onto our ageing web servers, so we have decided to replace them both with new HP 2 x 2.5Ghz Intel Quad Core Processor boxes.
We expect this to make a further noticeable increase in the speed of pages downloading and will ensure that we can cope with the huge increase in traffic we always enjoy over the Xmas period and beyond. The new hardware is also more reliable and has a good service response time ensuring that problems should be rarer and resolved quicker.
This is the first time we have opted for the 'no compromise' hosting solution and it has been made possible by the stellar work of everyone at AVForums, from the moderators keeping the forums running smoothly to Phil, Simon, Chris, Cas, Brian, Keith, Andrew and Imran producing quality content, to Lee's team breaking sales records, to the companies from the AV industry who appreciate that this is the premier website to advertise on.
And don't forget that this has been made possible by you, the AVForums readers who view the adverts and use our advertisers.
Thanks.

Re: Server upgrade complete
Excellent. It's early days but this is how I've always wanted the forums to be.

Re: Server upgrade complete
I'm going to hold off on any more changes so we can test what we've now got.

Let's see how it goes over the next week or so. I've put a hold on any further changes.

Re: Server upgrade complete
No comments on whether it's faster or not. I guess that means it is

Re: Server upgrade complete
On the whole it seems a bit quicker but sometimes when posting i still get "waiting for avforums.com" and also it sometimes get stuck with"transferring data from ad.uk.doubleclick.net" but that seems to be happening less often now.
