A major upgrade to AVForums is coming soon. We use vBulletin software which has just published a major new release.

The upside is that we get lots of new features and functionality, a small number of which are:

• Inline spam management & prevention
• Thread tagging
• Search cloud / tag cloud
• Thread prefixes
• Reciprocal friendships between users
• Public visitor messaging on profile pages with 'conversation' feature
• User picture galleries with user comment facility
• User-created social groups with invite only and moderated membership options
• Extended member profile pages
• Customizable member profile pages with admin-controlled styling abilities
• Inline editing of custom user profile fields
• Lightbox viewer for attached images
• Viewable and comparable history maintained for post edits
• Extended re-authentication for inline moderation actions
• Notices system for navigation bar
• Multiple human-verification systems including reCAPTCHA, image verification and Q/A
• User change history
• Social bookmarking integration

The down side is that most of the key additional add-on features we use are not ported to the new version, yet. These include the iTrader system, the post report system, post Thanks facility, special classifieds form, classifieds archival and PM auto reply as well as loads of behind-the-scenes tools for the moderators. (Your iTrader and Thank You figures will NOT be lost and will continue into the new system).
I would wait for these add-ons to be updated, but the new features (especially the social networking ones) and the included major security fix are so important that I want to upgrade sooner rather than later.
Plus bringing the add-ons online slowly later will mean we can assess their impact on board performance more accurately.

When the upgrade happens, the forums are very likely to be down for several hours and return missing much of the above mentioned functionality you are used to.
Naturally I will try time the upgrade when the forums are quietest and try to finish the process as quickly as possible. Apologies in advance if you are kept waiting.

how long will the itrader system and classifieds form be down? Those ones are such an integral part of the forums their absense will be very noticeable, the trading forums will be a complete shambles

iTRader has the highest priority and you will continue to be able to trade - just not leave feedback for a few days.

Can I add a ditto to absolute priority on restoring trader ratings - I've been stung on here before (pursued a successful claim using moneyclaim online against the bleeder though) and it's a key part of our forums.
We always knew the mods had "loads of behind the scenes tools"

You already can edit the titles of your own threads outside of the classified forums.
But you can't edit your threads at all in the classifieds. This is so that people can't move the goalposts during a trade. e.g. they put in an offer but are beaten by someone offering the asking price and so then edit their post to change it to offer the asking price to win the sale.
With the new version, all post edits are logged, so we *will* allow people to edit their posts. We can then spot if someone has cheated in a trading thread and will punish them accordingly.

The iTrader plugin for vBulletin is here and is not supported by the original author.
I have already asked a coder, Kirk, to help me bring iTrader up to 3.7 and will possibly add more features like rebuttals. Kirk has written several modifications to vB for us already like thread archiving and the over 18 age check in classifieds.

great news stuart. regarding itrader, if you read kirk's thread you can see several members already using itrader hack on 3.7. But it would be a risk in implementing unsupported version in a bulletin board like avforum with large userbase

It will be a great fun having tag clouding, lightbox & extended user profile. Vbulletin rocks!

The thread titles can be edited, but any changes only affect the header for post #1 (for which you have to click into the thread to see). The overall thread title does not change - unless I'm missing something?

It's always good to move with the time's some of the other forums I'm involved with have done the upgrade from the beta to the full and they had some issues to and some of them is still working out kinks so good luck and hope everything goes smoothly for you.

www.onthedarkside.co.uk it's a new forum for Xbox 360 users and still using they're training wheels there are thousand of forums out there now and to pick which one you think is the best is a gamble I'm a new member to this forum and I say I've made the right move in joining as this forum is going places and I'm glade to be part of it.

A Home cinema tech radar site - no forums. Is it connected to this site ?

Totally unimpressed with what I got.

I eventually "Googled" and found the magnificent site I have used for years but am now confused.

Will this forum still be available to us ??
