Forum news

Some news to report.
First of all we have reached a couple of new milestones this month. 300,000 members and 9 million posts. Thanks to all our members for contributing to this awesome growth.
I have pruned some of the quiet social groups. Those with few members and/or not posted to for some months have been removed. If you start a social group, please make the most of it.
I have made some small adjustments to the menu. The 'Home' tab has been replaced by the more logical 'Features' tab, and the tabs with sub menus have been made non clickable to standardise functionality.
Lastly I have created a few more tiers of member titles to reflect that we have some people with more than 20 and even 30 thousand posts!!

Re: Forum news

Hi
Maybe I am missing something but I do not like the revised browsing setup.
Previously by right clicking "Forums" the user had a usefull index whereby threads were only two clicks away.
No doubt I will get used to it.

Hi Stuart,

I don't like the new format either. Please put it back as it was

Graham

Edit: Just found the list tab, which then functions as before. But the good news is I am now one post nearer to making 1000, only 624 more to go

It's a bit of a pain having to click the sub menu tabs. I find it better when you have all the forum sections on one page, it's easier to navigate, a lot easier.

Normally to view, say the Blu-Ray section, you would simply click on the forums tab which would then display all the different sections, then you would simply click Blu-Ray movies, etc.

Now, you've got to highlight the forums tab, move down to Movies which then shows all the film related sub forums and then click Blu-Ray movies etc...

It isn't much of a problem, it was just easier to navigate the entire forum before, when all threads were on one page. I've actually got the hang of it now, don't know what all the fuss was about. LOL!

Re: Forum news

I believe that preeminent means something like 'surpassing all others' while eminent merely means 'highly ranked or thought of' so preeminent should really be above eminent. The 'pre' is a bit misleading and doesn't mean 'before or below' but something more like 'in advance of' .

Havent noticed much difference to the GUI myself. Cheers for the behind-Teh-scenes work (apart from the Bourne-like adverts).

Maybe the usage of the word "member" should be reconsidered, a combination of this post and the conspicuous and prominent titles had us in stitches

I noticed I'd temporarily changed to "appreciated member".

I immediately thought "that looks like other members aren't appreciated ?"

I'm glad you dropped that one Stuart.

Just been on the "about us" thing.

Incredible growth, about 100,000 new members every 18-19 months

Keep up the good work Stuart (and Admin, mods etc).

Re: Forum news

The "tree" formula under the forums is annoying.

Sorry to say Stewart, at times, you over-tinker. It's great you want to improve things, but I thought it was nice and easy to get around before, so a bit of a backwards step, IMO.

All the best,

T.

I can't see the problem?

You hit "forums" and then "list". It's one extra click

Although I accept it's not as easy as it was, it's not exactly hard work, is it

too much tinkering methinks. Hate the tab structure. I used to spend a lot of time on the classifieds and it was much easier before. Please change it back.

Agree it's easier to just click the forums tab and I have put the link back. I made the changes so the menu would work on the new iPhone software.

Stuart, the Forums tab link now takes you to the home page instead of the list of forums.

Thumbs up Re: Forum news

Hi,
I rarely post as I just use this forum to select my next 2nd hand purchase .
I think the vast number of members with useful input for non-technical(not really interested) persons such as myself make selection of kit a damn sight easier.
I think its great that true and outstanding forummers can be easily identified
and their advice treated with respect by plug in and go types like me.

cheers !!

Yes, and why is Senior one of the lower ranks and why do you only become conspicious after you've been prominent?

Re: Forum news

Since the tab functionality was changed back, some of your code is showing!

Code:
ob_start(); include('/home/sites/avforums/public_html/page_top.html'); = ob_get_contents(); ob_end_clean();
Appears above the top left logo and the tabs.

Sorry, forgot to add that I'm viewing in IE7 on Vista. IE V7.0.6000.16386

Edited to add: seems to be ok now.

Am I missing something? When I press Classifieds on the top menu now, it gives a list of things for sale which is no use at all! What happened to the link which took you to the complete Classified section????

33,000 posts since 2006 Though I reckon if you cut out his three word posts you'd knock 10,000 off

My wife moans at me for spending time on the forums, and I'm less than 9000 in 7 years. O-M-G....is it REALLY that long?

9 years here...but I left for 6 months halfway through as I had to go away...they couldn't retrieve the 3000 posts I had before as Army Bloke/Family Guy but Ian J was able to adjust my join date to when I actually joined...:
