It is a joke. It just shows that had it been anyone other than Redknapp was going to get a hard time from the press. The press are a cause of all the problems surrounding the England team from unrest between players to over enthusiastic comments after a decent result to massive expectations before a tournament. Still Hodgson is the manager the press have been asking for for ages. He's English and has bags of experience. He certainly can't do much worse than Capello in any case.

In the grander scheme of things it doesn't really matter who the England Manager is, they are still dealing with a public who have a deluded sense that their team is actually many times better than it is.

I would put myself in that group sadly. We always think England will win and beat anyone, but in actual fact they are a second tier team and quarter finals of World Cup and semi finals of Euros is probably a fair bet these days.

Without an overhaul and dumping of the old guard players, we won't get anywhere.

As far as Euro 2012 is concerned, if we made the semi finals I would probably be happy with that.

I stopped reading most newspapers ages ago, particularly the sport section. Just get sick of reading the same old crap.

Did you? Euro 96 is best side you had in long time. Actually enjoyed watching you play as you played decent, quite exciting stuff.

The best I've seen England play in the last 20 years is when Rooney broke into the team during the European Championships of 2004. They decimated a few teams. I remember a particularly good performance against Croatia. Rooney (who was a completely different player to the one he is now) then got injured in a game against Portugal, and England got knocked out on penalties I think.

Off the top of my head, other great performances in recent years were the 5-1 away defeat of Germany, and a good Capello-managed performance against Croatia, a few months after they'd given us a hiding when McLaren was the manager. There was also a very good friendly match against Argentina which Owen won with a good goal. It was friendly by name, cos I remember both teams taking it very seriously.

So it's clear that on certain occasions, the golden generation are/ were capable of good performances. That's why its such a mystery that they failed repeatedly in latter years.

I'm not sure it's a coincidence that most of these performances took place during the football season, and not after the end of one. I still think that the absence of a winter break is very important, not just for summer international tournaments, but also for final stages of Champions league.

Dispensing with the Carling Cup, stopping FA Cup replays, reducing the Premier league by one team, and introduction of a winter break would have a pretty big instant effect, in my opinion.

Hodgson eyes Euro 2012 quarter-finals - News | FOX Sports on MSN

Roy already playing down expectations saying "Id be disappointed if we didnt get out of the group"

This was another reason why us LFC fans didnt take to him the whole circus of his comments.

4 July: “I like a high-tempo passing game”
All the things I’ve always liked are the things Liverpool were famous for in their heyday. Pass and move, always move it quickly and once you lose it get back in to position. That was the mantra which took Liverpool through their great years. I like a high-tempo passing game. I like players to work hard, I like players to get back in position. Those are my principles. I was influenced by the Liverpool team which dominated the 70s with all its great players and playing the football they played.

But if you look at the statistical analysis of games compared to the season before Players like Pepe Reina passed the ball out of defence now he was told to do what an "English Goalkeeper does" and punt it long.

3 October: “From Halmstad to Malmo to Orebo to Neuchatel Xamax…”
What do you mean do my methods translate? They have translated from Halmstad to Malmo to Orebo to Neuchatel Xamax to the Swiss national team. So I find the question insulting. To suggest that, because I have moved from one club to another, that the methods which have stood me in good stead for 35 years and made me one of the most respected coaches in Europe don’t suddenly work, is very hard to believe.

13 November: “He’s not performed — very often at least — to the level I’d expect of him”
(Johnson) is the England right-back and, if he plays like that, one would expect him to come back in when he’s fit. But then he’d have to play like the England right-back and up to now, to be quite frank, he’s not performed – very often at least – to the level I’d expect of him. You would have to ask him ‘do you think you’re playing at top form and are you playing like the best right-back in the country for your club?’ If he says yes, obviously we will have to agree to differ and if he says no, then you’d have to ask the question ‘why not?

14 November: “I didn’t realise I had been accused of criticising him”
It amazes me that when you make a statement of such obvious veracity people want to make headlines out of it. Everyone is saying what I am saying. I hope I am honest and I hope the players are honest. I didn’t realise I had been accused of criticising him; I don’t normally criticise my players and I’m sorry if that has been suggested.

14 December: “We are right up there in terms of results” (having won 7 points from 18 and being 11th in the form table)
The only team with better results than us over the past five or six games is Arsenal or Manchester United. If you take the last five or six games we are right up there in terms of results

But its all our fault should of been given time should of been given time for crimes against football flittered on the verge of relegation and managed the worst cup defeat in the history of the club.
By claiming the northampton team were formidable opposition

When he was sacked we were 4 points above relegation he was sacked at Blackburn with the most expensive squad in the league they were relegated the same season.

Seriously is this the best candidate for the England Managers position

Can you not simply accept that the majority of football fans think he's a decent choice for the job? The horse is dead, you can stop flogging it now. ;-)

Honestly I dont care i stopped following the english football team many many years ago.

But on a footballing sense can anyone tell me what qualifies this guy as the leading candidate of the position of Manager of the England football team.
His CV??
His Results??
His Honours List??

The media after the last world cup demoralised english football by showing how many levels of coaching were behind the rest of the world??
Something the FA have looked to address for its old skool approach so the appointment of 442 Roy just bemuses me.

Roy once said his track record "If people bothered to study it" would put him in the same category as Fergie

Only winning the John West tuna cup in Scandanavia

I remember all Newcastle fans complaining about Pardew...
You just don't know how things will turn out so best to just be quiet and see how it pans out. You aren't going to win anything but will qualify for most tournies so just accept it.

There are a whole host of managers out there that their CV`s speak for themselves Fabio Cappelo`s record as England manager was the best perecntage of any England Manager.

I still cant get over the England manager has to be english either are the Irish bothered Trapatoni is Italian he has a massive CV also

Rafa Benitez-Currently Unemployed 2 La Liga Titles Uefa Cup Champions League FA Cup
Guss Hidink- European Cup FA cup Dutch Titles and far superior International record than Roy

Why not appoint a young manager with new ideas and a fresh approach to football

I'm happy with the appointment simply because Roy has international experience, a decent club record and is a wily old fox.

I'd equally be happy with just about anyone else too.

I'm just curious as to why you appear to be so vehemently against Roy when I can't really see many other alternatives.

I think he's a good appointment. He's English for a start, has domestic and international experience at club level and national team experience. He's also turned around West Brom's fortunes. He's certainly a better candidate than Harry who has a record of making his teams overachieve before leaving them in the crap. I would have liked to have seen him make use of his dodgy famed transfer dealings on the international stage, but it wasn't to be.

Because he is rubbish
And his record does not speak for himself anyway ive had my say and i know that he will be sacked sooner rather than later probably take over at a [prime objective is to stay in the prem] team and do ok.
Its his level of expertise i just think that his CV speaks failure to me and has failed at pretty much every decent job he has had.
And hoof ball football is his forte so if everybody is happy having a man who is an also ran as manger of England then im happy for you all.

Ill expect a you were right Si all along after the Euro`s when we fail to get past the group stage with no wins and plenty of draws

Fair enough, we shall revisit this thread upon his failure or success. When you say, "you were right Dave, he is a wily old fox".

It wasn't a fault at all it needed to be done this is something a lot of fans don't understand shake ups need to be done at times and time is needed to rebuild a squad.

It is clear why you hate Roy most Liverpool people never gave him a chance in the first place he came with new ideas and trying to change things which curtain players didn't like so they refused to put effort in and a lot of people wanted Dalglish so wasn't pleased when Roy got the job also Liverpool are another one who are living off past glories you haven't been good for a long time. There is also the money thing Roy had what not even 15 million with a squad that wasn't great then dalglish comes in and they spend 100+ million.

Roy was chosen for England because he's English people had been moaning about that for long time and he has a lot of experience.

At the end of the day the position England are in there's no downside to the deal, if people are unhappy with him in many years time then maybe Harry will be ready for the job then. England fans expect way too much at times.

its interesting how one or two posters focus on his time at Liverpool when he was given a very limited budget, couldnt get the players on side and had the fans on his back the whole time.I am quite sure Fulham West Brom, Malmo Inter Milan and the Swiss national side fans have a very different take on him.
Roy is known to be very methodical and if her manages to enlist his previous sidekick Ray Lewington who is still at Fulham and is known to be a good coach, then we could start seeing some improvement.I dont expect to see much for the Euros as 40 days is no time at all.If he manages to get England out of a what is a tricky group ,then that to me would be excellent. The bloke deserves a honeymoon period so i hope the likes of the Sun get of his back.
First step is to try and sort out the fractured Terry/Ferdinand scenario

This is far too sensible a post. And how you can criticise such a knowledgable set of fans, fans known as 'the best fans in the world' is just pure cheek!

Blimey.
Banned for the first two games and has been utter at every tournament he's been at.

If Sturridge or Welbeck (for example) score in both group games he's banned in will they deserve to be dropped in your opinion??
