i have been looking around now for a while for a new receiver and have boiled it down to these sets and maybe the rx-v3900 as it is a hell of a lot cheaper at the moment at £950. but anyway i only care about the receiver producing awsome sound and being able to deal with the new hd audio codecs.( and it would be handy but not entirely neccassary that it does a reasonably good job of deinterlacing and scaling etc as my panny doesnt do a great job in these areas. after looking closely it really does seem like i would be getting much more in the way of sound quality with the rotel or nad and loosing some imho un neccassary bells and whistles. is this really the case? would there really be a very noticable difference in sound quality for these receivers in comparisson to the more mainstream onkyo or yammy z7? also can anyone clear up for me if the nad t775 does actually come with the hd audio capabilities and video upscalling or is this only available through their mdc modules? just wish i could find one shop that stocks all these receivers and would be willing to audition all of them on the same day and set up to the same speaker package!!lol well i can dream. until then informed opinions are great.

Hi, I hope somebody in the know will be able to help me here.

I've had trouble since day one trying to get my SkyHD viewing to match the audio in terms of lip syncing, I know sometimes a quick up and down of the channels seems to reset it but I wondered if there's more I can do.

I have Sky+ HD connected to my Samsung LE40556A LCD tv with a chord hdmi cable, the audio goes to my Arcam AVR280 via QED optical cable.

I can set Sky to delay the sound via the optical, but i need it to catch up with the video! I would put the video signal through the Arcam receiver but I don't know if this would slow it down to match the sound better or not. I only have 2 hdmi inputs and I use one for PS3 and one for Xbox 360, plus as the Receiver is incapable of decoding audio over HDMI as I understand it I think I'm getting a better picture connecting the Sky HD directly to the TV.

Any suggestions or solutions would be much appreciated, it's really spoiling my viewing pleasure.

Thanks in advance

I have a restricted budget and am trying to buy a surround system. I play xbox a lot and watch a few films. I like music but since I got into ipod & itunes etc haven't really listened to my old denon much. So here is the problem. Do I buy a modern receiver and spend 300 and cut back getting cheap speakers or do I spend 100-150 on getting the arcam bearing in mind the xbox gets connected by optical instead of new fangled hdmi stuff. If I do the latter I'll go secondhand on decent stereo speakers and fill in the surround when funds allow. Or do I just accept decent stereo is a thing of the past and get denon + jamo set at richer sounds. Also have any other members had this conundrum and what did they do?

I have the above receiver with the following equipment connected.

Sony RDR-HXD970 DVD Recorder connected to "DVD In" HDMI connection
PS3 connected to "Video2/BD In" HDMI connection

The HDMI out from the receiver goes to an HDMI in on my Panasonic PX70.

I also have a Sky HD box connected directly to the second HDMI on the TV

Now here is my problem. When i put a DVD with a 5.1 DD soundtrack in the 970 and select the DVD (HDMI) input on the receiver (AFD sound field selected), the front panel multi channel decoding lamp (blue light) comes on to signal that the receiver has auto detected the multi channel digital soundtrack and the soundtrack plays correctly through my 5.1 speaker system. However when i then turn on the TV and select the HDMI 1 AV input to display the picture the "blue light" on my receiver immediately goes out and the sound track changes to a 2 channel signal. The receiver panel then displays 48khz pcm. If i turn the TV off again the full 5.1 digital sound comes back onto the receiver (blue light comes back and panel displays Dolby Digital)

Strangely this is not happening when i play a dvd through the ps3 and select the same tv input, in this case the blue light stays on and the multi channel track plays correctly.

Can anybody throw any light on what is happening, do I have a fault on my gear or am I doing something wrong?

I considered my Sony amp might be the best place to start but with what ? Until recently it was possible to upgrade well from the second hand market but now the requirements for HDMI connections and HD 1.3 etc make this very difficult.
Think about £500 would be the budget, any suggestions new or second hand would be welcome.

I read in What Hi-Fi the Jamo were about as good as you can get for the money, but can be a little bright, and to pair with a smooth amp such as Denon or Yamaha.
Would I be making a mistake by going for the H/K with these speakers?

Hi

I am finally upgrading my old DD amp to a HD amp and have narrowed down to the Onkyo TXSR607 or the VSX-1019

They both seem to deliver the features i need but i am interested in opinions on sound.

I have Klipsch speakers which have horn tweeters, (Synergy Series) and have read the pioneers are a bit bright and may not work so well with such speakers. As soon as i seem to mention Onkyo i get instant nods of approval but nothing to really back it up.

I currently have a low end old pioneer and it does well for what it is but just sounds vacant.

I am after something that will sounds clean and smooth musically and also good on movies. I also have a rather tight spot for the amp to live in (Only 188mm tall, i think the onkyo is 178mm to only 10mm) so i need to make sure it doesnt fry

ORRRRR what does everyone think of the Sony STRDA2400
