I live in the Manchester region tried a place called Retro Games in Affleks Palace but they only had 4 games which were a crap selection as well.
My local gamestation no longer has any (i remember them having a glass cupboard full of MegaDrive & SNES games).
So apart from ebay & the sunday car boot sales is there any retro shops around the Machester area or even greater Manchester area ?

Personally i no longer feel the need to purchase any gaming magazines (even retro ones) as i game little and read even less nowadays, but i'm sure there are people on AVF that would be interested to hear from people that may have already tried this one and those who haven't may like to check out the review.
Is there a cable available or does anyone know how to make a cable to connect from the Din Socket to a scart or what options are available ?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thread to post new ideas for polls, listings, resources, forum games, image collections or other stuff that you think the AVF retro gaming section is currently lacking, needs expanding or enhancement.

Maybe you have ideas but don't have the time to implement them into your own thread, don't know where to begin or just don't know how to go about it, post them here and let's see if after a bit of discussion, between us either solely or with a little assistance maybe even involving the forming of a small team (if required) a few of them could come to fruition.

Please make sure your idea is retro gaming related before posting.

Don't worry if a thread has already been created on the subject matter, there is always room for improvement, just use the search function, i'm sure another member will provide a link if the idea has already been covered.

Bit of a reminiscing thread so get your pipes out gentlemen for a smoke lol. The arcades were a special place for me as a kid. Getting some coins saved up and playing games like Gauntlet, Paperboy and Joust at the fayre (what century did I live in again? lol). Heading down the pier on holiday for a game of Bomb Jack and Mikie, pouring coins into Indiana Jones and Kung Fu Master at Butlins Minehead LOL! Maybe even a fight on the pitch n putt afterwards. :rotfl:

I find it interesting that the technology at home has taken over these days and possibly since the early-mid 90s. Arcades used to be packed cos the conversions on home computers weren't that great. I mentioned Gauntlet to a 20-something gamer a few years ago and he didn't know what it was! I was horrified and felt quite ancient! Much like the wizard in Gauntlet lol. Incidentally, I always need food badly.

I went to the London Trocadero a couple of years ago with my brother and it wasn't very busy. They even still had an ice hockey game like NHL on the Megadrive (the one where they copied the Madden sound effects). These arcades will be known as 'museums' before too long hehehe.

Think of all the 80s movies that had arcades in them too. Remember the classic Tron? I loved that film and game in the arcades.

Or the Popcorn - Hot Butter music on Pengo?

Post your arcade memories or favourites from back in the day...

I've always found the 3DO to be a a bit of a curiousity in the console world. Some of its games are quite impressive more so than later PSX and Saturn games other games are weak to say the least. It seems to have about the same memory as psx/saturn thereabouts, similar speed cdrom drive but its main cpu is only a 12.5mhz arm chip compared to a 33mhz mips chip in psx and 2x25mhz hitachi risc chips in saturn. Some psx games especially those that really try to push the system are very low resolution something like 256x244 where as all 3DO games are 640x480 but its an interpolated resolution I believe like the N64 but unlike the N64 it wasn't limited by cartridge sizes so could feature more textures.

I'm just curious as to what the 3DO had for a gpu as some of its games like starfighter are vastly superior to the psx and saturn versions with better lighting, graphics effects, frame rates etc. Look here at starfighter on saturn (psx version is no better as I have that) and then the 3DO version. I can't seem to be find the information on line and just wondered if anyone had come across any interesting info.

saturn
psx warhawk

You can see the saturn has all sorts of clipping and fogging effects in action to keep the frame rate up and the lighting is pretty weak. The game is transformed on 3DO and looks and plays fantastically. I realise the saturn has fairly weak 3D hardware but the psx version is just the same.

I've used Warhawk to demonstrate a similar game on psx. Its not as open and you can see its running at the minimum psx resolution. You can't deform the landscape like starfighter so its 3D engine is a lot more simplistic.

A similar story can be seen for Need for Speed. Doom on the 3DO is pretty hopeless though. I just wonder how powerful the 3DO gpu is and who designed it?

This is all the information I can find;
Yep they are there and some people will probably never know they exist, hence the reason behind this thread.
If you own one of these cheap plastic alternatives or are considering buying one then post in here.

Hi guys,

Just wondering how you do this?

I have a megadrive, a SNES, a N64 a Dreamcast and an Amiga. I tend to play on one for a while and then rotate but it would be great if I could have them all set up together.

How would I do this.

Anyone remember California Games on the C64? I read a while back that a company was doing a re-make of this for the PSP. It was due out some time ago but all went quiet. Did anyone hear what happened to it? The same company was going to do The Last Ninja PSP as well.

I never owned a SNES back in the day but a friend of mine did. It's one of the few consoles I might consider buying that I never owned. First of all, what is a reasonable price to buy one generally? Secondly what are the best games for it. I remember a few but probably missed out on some classics. I like games going back to late 70s pong so anything is fine with me if it is interesting or fun. Thanks

P.s. What accessories should I get with it? Two controllers? Anything useful? Not sure on when I'll buy one due to cash but want to think about it.
