My problem is the internet connection is VERY intermittant. It will work for 15 mins, then off for 10 mins, then back on for 15, then off, then on, then off, etc etc.

I was wondering if anyone had any advise on how to sort this out? or at least have experienced any similar issues?

I have up to 4 connections for it. PC, Laptop, PS3, and 360. Although only 2 are connected at anytime. I am using all automatic settings through the router.

I look forward to your help!
Thanks

Hi all, first post here.

I am a 50mb virgin user who has been suffering with no conncetion between 4pm and Midnight every day for the last 9 weeks, I have been thrown just about everything from virgin for free from my V+ HD box to 3 months free VIP package to 80 quid off my bill, but still this is not fixed. I have eventually spoken to a broadband specialist called james from the sheffield call center, (he knows his stuff and very helpful) I am an IT technician for a univeristy and I am fairly knowledgable about Connections over a copper pair or ethernet but not up to speed on Fibre and coaxial connections.

If anyone else is in the NE6 area and suffering terrible connection between these times there is an answer on the horizion. VM have acknowledged that there is and has been a fault in my area for a long time (after 2 routers 2 engineers and 2 modems) the problem being is that there are 266 clients attached to my CAB, and they are all uploading, whether it be pics for facebook,/twitter/ or utorrent /Bit comet. so the CAB utilisation on the upload stream is running constantly at 100% utilisation, which means that My download signal cannot get through. I have to add the NE6 is a very dense area populated with hundreds of student houses/flats and in the summertime my connection is floorless, but every september when the students come back my connection suffers. So the answer is that they have to upgrade the "HEAD" part of the network which I belive is the junction that My area joins the national "Spine" part of the network which is going to be done by the very latest 30th November. I have had reassurances of this from a manager in 2nd level support. so there could be some planned downtime for the NE6 area between now and then.. So In the meantime I have no connection for another 2 weeks, this must be a big job if they acknowledge the fact there is a problem but cannot fix until the replacement parts or the engineer resources are available.

If anyone is in the same area, and suffering, please contact VM support, the more people that complain about that area the quicker it will get fixed. I mean having no connection for 9 weeks is so frustrating, but having HD as another form of entertainment has eased the pain but not by much..

so please start this thread for the NE6 area in Newcastle Upon tyne and hopefully get it sorted quicker for everyone.

regards

I've been with O2 broadband for almost 2 years getting a solid 6 Megabit connection - was very happy, until around this time last month when the connection dropped to 0.3 Megabit. Long story short, it was half-fixed and lies with BT who refuse to help again so I'm stuck at about 2.4 Megabit on ANY ADSL provider. This is not enough for my household!

So I've decided VirginMedia for broadband may be the best plan. However I'm worried about their throttling techniques, as a lot of iPlayer/downloading etc goes on. Can anyone put me at ease for this? Reading over Virgin's own tables was disconcerting!

Any knowledge/tips would be greatly appreciated.

Now I've discovered pingtest, the results fluctuate between a Line Quality rating of C and F. More often than not it's the F:

This is pretty awful isn't it? Is there something I'm missing or doing wrong?

The modem and router get rebooted every dayas I turn everything off at the mains overnight, so it's not a needs reset issue.

I'm convinced it is affecting my online gaming, what can I do about it?

Has anyone else been having problems with their connection in the past day or so?

In short, my laptop keeps dropping the connection when I am connected to my wireless network. This was never the case before today. At first I thought it was down to the recent weather, but now I'm not so sure. Until today I have always had an "Excellent" connection at 100%.

I'm not sure if it's the modem, the router, or even the laptop, which is relatively new.

Sometimes it can't even find my network, which lead me to think it was the router, even more so when I found my network but it didn't seem to have a signal.

Any thoughts or advice would be most welcome.

I am having virgin 50mb installed on sat and I am wondering if I should upgrade my router before they install the new one. I know i get the free D-link but I am well aware that the routers that ISP's provide are usually pretty rubbish. If I am paying all the money out for 50mb I would want to get the most out of it!! I will be running a couple of xbox's, macs and laptops and I am not sure if the router would ever give me 47mb + wired or wireless....

Is it worth buying a great router now or would the D-link do the job good enough?

Thanks in advance people!!

I am in the process of moving into a new house and I am decorating the new property.. I am transferring my current Virgin BroadBand to my new address. The thing is in the new address I wanted to place all the cables under the floorboards and I am in need of some virgin media broadband cable. They are connecting me on the 25th Nov but I will have layed all my laminate flooring by then so I need the cable pretty soon.

I thought that it was just a normal coaxial cable but I was mistaken when asked around.. Please can someone advise me of the correct cable which I need so I can go and purchase and prepare it and lay the flooring down..

Hi all

I have been with VM since they were NTL Telewest, and for as long as I can remember was always on the middle tier of the broadband offerings, it used to be called 4MB Unlimited and was then changed to "L" and has always been £25.

Was chatting to a friend yesterday who said he has always been on the bottom tier and that now he has been upgraded to "L" which is now the slowest/cheapest BB option.

My question is ... should I have been upgraded to the XL service?

By bill breakdown is as follows:

Line Rental : £11.00
Broadband Size L : £25.00
Phone and BB bundle saving : -£8.00
Talk Weekends : £0.00

Total : £28.00

So am I being greedy or am I entitled to something more?

This is instead of continuing to pay BT £11.25 line rental a month + call charges.

As long as I inform VM 30 days before new 12 month contract expires that I wish to renew, they''ll keep me at £22, otherwise it would go up to £32.95. I keep my phone number too. How good is that? :smashin:

I've been getting different prices though. Someone was gonna call me back yesterday from VM and he had offered it at £24 earlier in the week. Today, I rang VM, and the guy said it's £22. So I agreed it at that price. Gotta pay BT £7.50 now for each month I'm breaking the contract with them, which is till July.
Still cheaper than staying with them.
