For the last few weeks speedtest now shows 2.5mb. I rang Sky and they said the most my line can support is 3mb. When I said I was getting faster last year they said that was impossible.

I said to the bloke there was no point in upgrading to their top BB package in that case and he said I would get a much faster connection if I did??. When I queried that he just said the maximum they reckon my line supports is 3mb then how can I get more??

Am I missing something here?

Is there anything I can do to get a faster connection?

Hello all,

Got a few problems im hoping some of you could help me with?

I am currently on the Sky connect service paying £10 a month as opposed to £17 after some hagling!

The test i do for connection speed always show approx 500-700 kbps maximum my nearest exchange is about 4-5 miles away and is only BT.

My 360 is connected via Ethernet to the router the laptop is wireless.

My main socket is upstairs with nothing connected.
I have two sockets downstairs one near my tv, router and 360 so my router is here and another the other side of the room with a phone connected.

The problem i am having is coming home from work at 6pm my 360 doesnt always connect automatically to live i have to re-set my router and try again.

This does not happen all the time but never used to happen at all!

Also when my missus is on the laptop and i turn the 360 on it will kick her off the internet while i will be ok but have to re-set the router for her. On other occasions she loses the connection and my 360 will not connect at all!

We have used sky for 18 months now but what i never really realised when we first got it was we did not recieve any filters? Despite this the connection always seemed ok.

I called sky who confirmed filters would improve the service and would send three off to me. I only recieved one so called back and spoke to someone else who said it would not make a difference so would not send me two more.

Should i go and buy more filters? Will not being connect to main socket be a problem?

Sorry for the long winded post but hopefully some of you could give me some advise?

Sky BB Connection Seriously SLOW!

I recently had some refurbishment work done in my house, and during the process the extension wire that comes from the Master box in the hallway to upstairs into my room was cut.

After stripping the wires and reterminating them where the cable had broken (cowboy style with a terminal block - 4 wires - orange, blue, white/orange, white/blue), the router data light went green and the internet was finally restored. However when I logged into the router to check the up and downstream speeds, it had been reduced by almost 70%! Before refurb work, my connection during off peak was around 9MB and it wouldnt drop below 7.5MB even during peak times.

Now my connection varies from 2MB -3.5MB

I do not know if its the botch wiring job I have done that is causing this slow connection, because I have tried it with or without a wiring block, making sure each copper strand is insulated from the others and am still getting the same slow speed.

Can anyone suggest anything? or is it that telephone wires are so sensitive that you cannot actually reterminate them at a cable break as there is too much interference?

I really do not want to be running a new extension cable from the master box all the way up stairs, especially since the walls have just been finished and are ready to be painted, I've chased enough cables through the walls and coving for a lifetime! But if this is the last resort I will have no choice.

I have been advised to bring my router downstairs and plug into the master box and check the connection to see if I get my previous ~9MB speed and if I do then there's definitely a fault on the extension cable... but does any one else have any other ideas?

I have tried to google/search for this but I don't understand the terms used so don't understand what the websites tell me ;)

I am considering switching to Sky Broad band. In the past I have used bethere and was very impressed with their ADSL2+ offering - I consistently got 10MB download speeds - so I know my phone line is up to the job.

SamKnows Broadband - Availability - Newmarket (EANMK) Exchange tells me the exchange has LLU for Sky, Bethere and Talk Talk. What I don't know is if this means I will get ADSL2+ from Sky?

The sky website predicts 5Mb speeds, bethere predicts 7Mb - and as I said I know I can get 10Mb from bethere. At 5Mb the speed is similar to what I would get with ADSL Max.

Can someone help me understand the buzzwords to find out if I cang et ADSL2+?

(The phone line is a BT line installed by The Post Office BTW)

The house is 2 months old, the broadband was connected 2 weeks ago, the computer is fine, I pay for the 10mb package. Having moved from a Virgin 10mb connection, I'm finding this terrible!
I'm no expert but my numbers look poor.
I've emailed Sky with the complaint form twice last week, and haven't had any return contact from them.
Is there anything obvious I'm missing or is there a physical problem causing the Noise margin...
