The sound quality from my Acer Aspire 3630 laptop has gone bit odd. It sounds like everyone has been breathing helium, ie high pitched and squeeky. The same applies to any music, seems to have shifted up and octave or two. I've tried using an external speaker ( JBL Radial ) but the problem persists.
Is there any tweaking I can do to fix it or is it maybe time for new soundcard?

Thanks
What have I missed out?

First of all, this set up did work, ever since I reformatted my PC it doesn't. I struggled to get this get up a year ago.

The set-up is as follows:

- My PC is up and running just fine, with 5.1 Logitech speakers.
- My PC is using a Creative Soundblaster X-Fi PCI Express sound card
- My PC has it's own monitor.
- My PS3 is hooked up to a separate monitor, with no speakers.
- The PS3 has an optical cable leading out into my PC sound card's optical-in hole.
- My PS3 is set for the audio to go via optical out, on 5.1 DTS. These are the same settings I used before formatting my PC, and it worked with these settings.

So I can confirm that my speakers work. My sound card works. I see a red light coming out of the optical cable from the PS3, so that works. I also have working drivers on my PC for the speakers, and I get surround sound on there.
This leads me to believe it's the settings of my 'Creative console launcher'. I have gone through all of the tabs and find nothing relating to optical-in.

In fact, I will print screen some my options, to try and prevent ambiguity.

The first 2 tabs are for speakers, and headphones. It's not the headphones option, and in the Speakers option I can change sound levels and modify the surround sound, so that the right sound is coming from the right speaker. That's it on this screen really, all of this is working fine.

This leaves tab number 3, titled 'Jacks'

I don't really know what's going on here, but I shouldn't need the microphone checked.

Tab 4 enables EAX effects, so I can make it sound like it's in a theater hall.
I don't really know what's going on in tab 5, but you can see it here, I don't ever remember toying with this when I got it working last year:

Tab 6 is for the X-Fi crystalizer, for enhancing sound I guess.

Tab 7 is for 'Graphic Equalizer'. I don't know what this is, but you can see the screen here:

Tab 8 is labelled 'Mixer'. You can see my options here, I think checking the S/PDIF box last year made it work, but not now. As you can see, the bottom 2 check boxes are greyed-out. And they stay that way no matter what I pick from the drop-down box.

Also, on the drop-down box it says 'Vista'. I'm actually on Win 7, but I doubt it makes a difference.

What do you think? I'm so lost right now, and it's driving me crazy.

My first post on this forum - hello everyone

I recently acquired a M-audio revolution 7.1 soundcard and connected it to the pci slot of my shuttle xpc sn41g2 - disabled the on-board audio and connected it to an old arcam amp connected to a pair of 4 ohm b&o speakers on my desk.

Worked brilliant - great stereo s/card. Never wanted any more channels.

Then, one day i noticed that it was only operating out of one channel (ie out of one speaker). :(

I've done everything, reinstall m-audio drivers, reinstall nvdia stuff. I've ruled out the amp and b&o speakers by connecting a laptop (using the same rca cable) - everything in stereo.

So, i remove card and re-enable the onboard audio on the bios and blow me, it still comes out of only one channel !!

Mmm, I'm afraid this one has me stumped - is it hardware (motherboard) or any low-level driver issue. Why does the onboard audio behave the same way as the pci card?

As the shuttle still just about cuts it for my purposes i'm reluctant to replace...........can anyone throw any light on this? I hope i've described the issue

Hi, sorry if this is not in the correct place or the answer is already out there somewhere. However, I will start at the beginning:

A couple of days ago i found my 2yr old banging keys on my laptop, checked to c if everything was working and it seemed fine, i know remember that she managed to open the control panel. I usually keep my sound off, and didnt think to check that. 2day, wanted to watch something on youtube and when i clicked on the sound button (bottom right corner) it came up with a message error... can't remember exactly but something like - there is no sound device... i checked out control panel, sounds and devices and indeed it is saying there is no sound device, and now the little sound button is no longer displayed at the bottom right so i can't get the message error again

can anyone help, if i haven't made myself clear, pls let me know

I used to own an Auzen X-Mystique 7.1 Gold sound card but recently I had to replace my motherboard and unfortunately while assembling and disassembling the components, one of the capacitors on the board broke.

So now I am in search of a new Sound Card and need your help for a good and reasonable replacement.

First, my mobo (EVGA 780i SLI) only has PCI slots and NO PCI-Express. So the new sound card must also be PCI!

Second, I will be using the card for both gaming by connecting it to a typical 2.1 speaker setup as well as there is a RCA digital cable that I will use to connect to a Dennon AV Receiver. Therefore, the sound card must also have a Digital (SPDIF) RCA Output!

Third, I am running Windows 7 Pro. The X-Mystique had an issue as Windows was never able to find a driver for it and I always had to haunt down the driver whenever I upgraded my OS. Perhaps all higher quality sound cards will have similar issues, I am simply not certain! I guess I am spoiled with the “Plug-n-Play” technology!!

Thanks in advance.

I've always had issues with voice communications and hissing in my headphones, and it's not a background noise hiss: it's a distinct high frequency tonic pitch.

The best voice software I've found thus far is gamecomm in regards to audio fidelity, provided that the person on the other end isn't using any boost/amplification on their microphone.

I was just wondering if there was any good voice clients you could reccomend or any setting I could alter to mitigate the pitch. I will admit, my sound card soundmax standard laptop soundcard but I've had this problem on my old desktop PC as well which had a soundblaster max something with optical out.

At present I run my microphone through my computer and I run the sound from my computer to an Astro Mixamp.

I don't think it's caused by my headset as I have a pair of Audio Technica ATH-AD 700 headphones.

I've been using this sound card via analogue cables to my reciever in conjuction with WINDVD+9 blu media player no problems.
However, been getting fed up with the odd new title not playing with WINDVD & waiting months before new patches are released.
So also been trying TMT3 which plays all the blus that WINDVD wont play, BUT the sound is like an old recording track.
Been told that TMT3 outputs the full high res sound track to card where as WINDVD cuts back the HDaudio before it hits the prelude.
Is this true and if so is my sound card faulty, as it should handle hi res sound. (out of warrenty period now, but may have been faulty since purchase ?)
Have lastest drivers installed, which made no difference.
My friend uses TMT3 with an Asus D2 card with no issues.

Any thoughts please....
