update done a new test formated it and tryed puttin a 13mb file on it and kept saying calculating and the power light went off on hd after 4min waiting and restart the hd and it showed the 13mb file but didnt play so looks like its gone dodgy

UPDATE FIXED was if i left the usb in and started the pc it caused the hardrive to not work correctly since i took usb lead out and started it then plugged the hd in it works faster

dont matter still broke

it worked for a few sec then did the same fault again

dont think its harddrive i think its windows 7 fault or something wrong with the usb maybe as i tested with a usb 2gb and get same fault

Hi people

I'm having difficulties getting my new Samsung F3 1TB internal HDD to work. It's SATA, however, my PC is a very modern IDE desktop. I purchased one of those cheapie SATA>IDE adaptors off ebay so I could use it but I'm having problems. I'm sure it's because of how it is set-up rather than an actual problem with the HDD itself. I've left the existing HDD in there and that is set to master... but as the adaptor and the SATA HDD don't have jumpers I can't set these to slave - it makes me think this is the problem.

I get the following error messages

secondary drive 0 not found

when I press F1 to continue, the computer boots from the original IDE HDD as per normal...

what am I doing wrong? on the first occasion I booted the PC up with the SATA HDD installed it recognised it as I got a new HDD bubble appear in the bottom right corner (I'm using XP by the way!) - however, other than that, I have got signs of life... please help me!

Thanks (in advance) to anyone who can help!

Hi,

I have replaced my drive in my PS3 and the drive which was removed has been put into a casing to use as an external drive. All seemed fine when plugging into my computer by USB as it was recognised and a message came up saying it was installed successfully and was ready for use. I then attempted to find the drive and it is not listed. I have followed instructions and found it listed in the devices but still it doesn't show up to use as a drive.

How do I get this drive to show up so I can utilise it as an external drive?

Many thanks

Has anyone else had this dilema. I am now thinking of buying a Samsung F3 1TB Hard Drive for ~ £60. The money I save could go towards buying some more PC games or upgrading my 8800GTS card or upgrading from 4GB to 8GB of DDR2 RAM. But what should I do? Is buying a SDD now really worth it? Perhaps I should wait until after Christmas or for another 6 months...

Has any one else upgraded their disk drive recently for Windows 7 installations and which (SDD or HDD) did you go for?

For those who got a HDD how did you partition your drive? Is this a good idea, for example to have one partition for OS and games perhaps and have a larger one for data, music/photos etc..?

Been reading reviews of various HDDs and see the usual batch of people that seem to very unfortunately experience a fail of some kind after only a few weeks or months.

Got me to thinking, do many people actually return drives to manufacturers even though their personal data may be a risk?

For example, on a drive I have a folder called private documents, this has a scan of my passport and driving license. It also has numerous works contracts and other personal information. Of course there are the family photos and videos which are private too but all this is a possible treasure trove for anyone to get hold of.

We have internet security software so that hackers cannot break into our systems and steal our data - yet we are expected to return faulty drives under warranty for anyone to snoop around.

Just wondered what the general opinon was on all this?

My local computer shop told me they wont stock Maxtor and I should buy a Western Digital from them.
Explained I have always used Maxtor and just want another drive to add to my 2 others and the guy said that Maxtors "are not what they used to be". He basicly said they are poor drives.

Is he right?
At the moment I am looking to buy this...

Hello everybody,

I need a hard-drive of about [Mod Comment: Link Removed]1 or 1.5 TB, and since I am not really up-to-date with the latest developments, I thought I'd ask people who have a better overall view of these things. My questions are:

(1) Is it worth waiting a bit more until SSD drives become more prevalent, and then grab a cheap 1.5 TB traditional (electromechanical) drive? Although I need storage space quite badly, I'd be willing to wait a bit more if I had reason to believe their prices will drop sharply within a month or so!

and

(2) Is it true that large capacity (>1TB) traditional (electromechanical) hard drives are more prone to data loss and crashes than "normal" capacity ones (say, around 320 GB)? If so, are other technologies (such as SSD hard-drives, or perhaps even large-capacity USB flash drives) a better overall choice (taking both price and reliability into account), for the moment?

Anticipated thanks for any replies, I really appreciate the help!

I am thinking of buying one of these as opposed to purchasing a media PC to run through my 32" Philips LCD.

Looking at the specs it seems a good item that could double up as an external storage device of my music, pics etc as well as my films. The fact that is it then simply a case (or so it seems) of plugging in via the scart makes it all the more appealing. The films I would be watching will be 99% AVI files which the unit accepts.

I have found an online Italian retailer (not a problem as I live in Greece) who can supply this for 99.00 euro which seems quite reasonable to me. What do you people think?

Has anyone had any experience of using these? Is there a better solution out there that I am not aware of? Any advice will be gratefully received.

I have a new camera which uses a Silicon Power 4GB SDHC card...which my laptop wont recognize. Its fine with normal SD cards but when i put any SDHC it wont read it. Iv read about the microsoft hotfixes but unsure as to what to download or if my laptop can even read them with a download or if i need a special card reader?

Its a Sony Vaio laptop about 3 years old i think, with windows vista and an internal card reader.

Thanks for any advice!
