Hi all. I've recently received my new Philips 47PFL9664 tv, and whilst I think the picture is extremely good, I can't help but feel the black level is no better than my 4 year old 37" JVC :thumbsdow. I've used the calibration facility on a blu ray and played around a lot with the various settings, but that doesn't make much difference. Everything else about the picture is great, apart from the "grey" it thinks is black.

I'd really appreciate any help because I'm sure a TV like this should produce much better blacks, or maybe I'm expecting too much? A good example is when there is a predominately black scene and the dynamic backlight/contrast option is on, the screen becomes what I consider almost true black (i.e as if the tv is off) - however, as soon as something brighter comes on it reverts back to grey. I'm sure there is a way to reduce this gap?

If anyone thinks the blacks should be good on this tv via correct calibration and can travel to Reading please let me know.

Thanks in advance,

David

I'm interested in learning how to calibrate display equipment for myself and friends.

I was just wondering what types of equipment people use and would recomend. I don't mind spending money on it as long as it good stuff. I would like to be able to calibrate Plasma, LCD and Projectors.

I have seen a few people use the Spyder3 equipment, are these entry level systems. Would I be better off spending more to get a better and more accurate result.

I'm sure it isn't going to be a easy as I thought but its something id really like to learn to do and will be hopefully attending a few courses.

Thanks in advance Luke

I am looking to get the TV early next year, I was also looking in to the new PF12 panel but the processing in the TV/amp is pretty good so I don't think I would gain much by buying the panel, and also the V10 is a lot more family friendly having freesat etc. Any opinions?

First off, sorry if this is the wrong place to post, but I've a couple of questions about calibrating my plasma.

I tried to use the Digital Video Essentials DVD last night. Brightness Pluge, no problem, Sharpness yep ok. Contract a bit fiddly not sure I see the blume until its really bluming but I get the idea. I rented the DVD so I didn't get the blue glasses andI can only calibrate colurs on Component input anyway so I left as is. And that was it, plus lots of waffle about the history of stuff I don't care about.

Did I miss something? Still not sure what to do with Tint control and too scared to go to the advance menu (I have a Panny PWD6).
Is this all the DVD does ? Loads of badly acted footage and a nice shot of the space shuttle, plus 3 test cards? What am I missing?

Second question, and this might show my total ignorance. If ISF calibration is setting the equipment up to match ISF standards and they are global and not specifically based on room lighting etc ( I know that effects it too), why don't they just set the stuff up right in the factory ? Why doesn't my telly come with 65k Kelvin out the box ? - I s'pect I look silly now as there must be a reaason for this.

I'm near heathrow and require an ISF guy to sort out me tv :lease:!

I was wondering though ive read on these forms that with plasmas the best thing to do when their new is to "burn them in", not exactly sure what this is but from what ive gathered its simply having the brightness and contrast levels on low for a certain period of time (any further elaboration much appreciated).

Yeah so do I need to wait a while before i can get it ISF calibrated? Or can I like still get it calibrated and simply turn down the brightness and contrast on one of the other picture modes unaffected by the ISF calibration.

Also I know the ISF calibrated picture modes get locked so there is no accidental alterations from the reading ive done but is it only one mode that becomes ISF calibrated or all of them?

Thanks

J
