Today I've been having my first bad bad Apple experiences....

I bought a Mac Mini Server, together with the Apple Wireless Keyboard and the new mighty mouse....I'm used that my other three macs just pickup a bluetooth keyboard and mouse no problem...So I didn't expect any problems...Boy was I wrong...

The OS-X server setup only asks for a mouse, the mouse connects but then after the X animation it disconnects and you can't do anything. It won't do anything with the keyboard....All information that I can see from Apple is that there is new software for the new wireless keyboard to make it work...So how do I do that when I can't connect it in the first place

Then the suggestion is that you can ssh in from another computer and get in that way remotely to make it do what it should do...Not for the ordinary user I would say....But guess what it won't connect to my network as I would have to type in the WPA2 password which I can't without a keyboard...

Fed up now and don't fancy going to MK tomorrow, so let's call applecare. Firstly the number provided with the computer documentation (only 1 week old) is no longer in use :mad:Very sloppy...

Now I am perhaps making some leaway as I've discovered the remote Apple Install...But guess what you need to boot holding the option key down so that you can select the remote install....And guess what I can't hold the option key down because you can't pair a keyboard :mad:

Luckily I remembered a trick and quickly got the remote from my AppleTV, hold down the menu button during startup and it is the same at the option key ;)

Now it is installing, slowly, but how is a 'normal' person supposed to do that? What excuse does Apple have when it controls its hardware and now it doesn't work out of the box...

Very disappointing....

My Mini Review of the Toffee Leather Sleeve for Macbook Pro

After a few neoprene jobbies I decided a while ago that my unibody MBP needed something just that bit more luxurious to cover its precious body. So I set out in search for a nice real leather sleeve. This was more difficult than I thought as most branded ones seem to be too expensive and the unbranded ebay ones are more than likely PVC.

So after scouring the internet for a while I discovered Toffee. They are based in Australia and make a full range of high quality cases for all sizes of Apple Laptops. The prices are available in UK pounds from the drop down menu on their site and they take paypal with free shipping to the UK. buy online

I decided on the Toffee Sleeve in brown leather as I thought it would go best with the silver aluminium of the Macbook Pro. After a few weeks wait it arrived today and I am really impressed. The leather has that lovely soft quality feel and there is no doubt that its 100% animal skin :smashin:. The quality of stitching and general craftsmanship seem way above its pricepoint.

Its lined with a really soft and padded mesh material and I'm confident that there's nothing in there to mark my laptop.

The fit of the sleeve is just right, nice and tight which is good as we all know real leather tends to give a bit over time. Its not tight to the point where its a struggle to fasten the zip but its got a reassuring snugness to it if that makes sense.

As far as customer service goes, I will give Toffee a 10/10. My purchase was not trouble free as the first sleeve they sent me was lost in the post at some point between Australia and Cumbria. But I emailed to ask where it was after the 10 day delivery time they quoted had passed and a really helpful girl called Natasha Sullivan replied within 24hrs and promised to send one out via Fedex, the same day I received a tracking email from her, and it arrived safely with me in the UK within 3 days of it being sent.

So all in all I would give the sleeve a 10/10, its exceeded the quality I was expecting at the very reasonable £44.95 shipped. I know I'll be reccomending these to all my friends, and whenever I buy a new laptop am sure I won't be going back to neoprene after this one.

Any questions, feel free to shout out.

PS: Please excuse my awful photography skill, I'm blaming it on the lack of natural light :rotfl:

Heres one of their own photos so you can see what it actually looks like

If anyone was looking for a decent Ad Blocker for Safari under Snow Leopard (as I have been over the past few months) then check out the below app.

Safari AdBlocker

I have been playing about with it and IMO it has been working very well. The bonus is that it runs natively in Safari 64 bit mode under Snow Leopard and you can manually set an allow/block list.

Hope it's of use to someone? :smashin:

Hi,

I'm handbraking my collection of DVDs, and although I'm happy for a lot of films to be downmixed to AAC Dolby Pro Logic audio, an they play fine but there are a few I would like to keep the full 5.1 audio on.

I have encoded a few movies with ONLY AC3 audio, to make sure there is no confusion. I have also installed QTPlayer 7 from the Snow Leopard install DVD as I know Front Row has problems with AC3 and QTX won't play AC3 audio.

When I play the movie in QTPlayer 7, I get good sound, but the receiver/amp only shows it as a Dolby Pro Logic II stream... In the Movie Properties/Ispector I can see the 6 channels of audio... I tried turning off the front left - ok... then the front right... ok, now just sound coming from the centre... turn that off, and... silence. So even though the Mac Mini sees the 6 channels, it's as though it's only sending out DPL2 to the receiver.

I also have perian latest installed.

Any clues? I'd love to get 5.1 sound out of my mac!

Mac Mini is brand new, connected with optical.

When my iMac sells, I am going to reformat the whole thing back to factory settings.... I am currently on Leopard but have just bought the upgrade disc for Snow Leopard and was wondering how I go about erasing the whole hard disc (everything) for when the new owner has the Mac

Now, when I install Snow Leopard onto the machine, will this do it for me or will it just install the OS over Leopard and keep all of my bits on the machine? If so, how do I then erase everything?

As always, any help will be greatly appreciated :)

Thanks :smashin:
