Hi guys
I am trying to figure out which headunit to go for to replace my ageing alpine 9812 unit. I am not that bothered about CDs as i cant remember the last time i played one in the car, I have all my music on my phone now so compatability with iphone 3g is very important. I think i have narrowed it down to either Alpine or Pioneer but i am not sure whether to go with single din or double din, single din gives me the use of my cubby hole which i can store my iphone for easy connection ( in am sure i could utilise the ashtray or something if i went double din though) and gives me a removable front. Double din might be better for ipod control which makes me lean towards that though. I also dont want to spend a fortune, £400 max, my solutions so far are

Pioneer 4100

Pioneer AVH-P4100DVD - Mobile Video

Alpine W404

Alpine IXA-W404R Double DIN iPod Media Receiver

Alpine X305

Alpine IDA-X305 - USB/SD Players

Alpine 9887

Alpine CDA-9887R - CD Player

Any thoughts or suggestions are most welcome.

Cheers

Hi All,
I'm after a head unit - got some fairly specific requirements though. Anyone able to help?

I need:
FM/MW radio
Reasonably powerful/decent internal amp
Rear USB connection
ability to use a standard USB->dock iPhone cable, i.e. doesn't need a special separate connector, and iPhone support i.e. playlist/genre/artist etc
bluetooth would be nice - even if needs a separate unit buying
ID3 tag support essential.

Idea is to get a Maplin panel-mount USB socket installed on the center console, then wire this to the unit's rear USB. I can then plug a pendrive into the socket for music playback, or plug and charge my iPhone and play music off that. The missus could also plug in her USB-bulk-storage-MP3-player when she wanted, too.

Anyone recommend a suitable unit?

My Ford Focus 6000 CD radio unit now says "phone" on the display, even though I don't even have phone kit!

I can't switch it to CD or radio, although it will occasionally play the radio for a couple of seconds before going back to "phone".

Is that a fault that can be repaired - or reset - easily?

Alternatively, is it possible to put a different branded unit into the space but use the existing speakers, and even steering wheel remote control?

I'd quite like to upgrade to a unit that is MP3 and iPod friendly without changing car!

The Mrs. wants to get the kids portable DVD players for christmas - but allow them to watch different DVDs on seperate screens. Rather than buying a dual screen / dual DVD unit (Argos sell one made by Bush) I'm wondering if it'll be better just to buy 2 seperate units and then use a cable like the above so both can be used at the same time.

"Will 12v (or 24v) and max. 10 amp be enough to drive 2 players" is probably a short version of what I'm asking! :suicide:

Any thoughts/help gratefully received!

My wife has just upgrade her laptop, which means we have an old Apple iBook going spare. Kinda toying with the idea of sticking in the car as some sort of video playback device or the like, either dvd's or vids off the hard drive.

First up, it would be best to feed video from the Mac to a screen, either on the roof or in head rests. Why is it almost all in car screens just have composite video inputs? That's got to suck, surely? I see there's an Alpine PKG-2000P which has s-video input, but it costs a bomb at over £700.
From the Mac I can get composite, s-video or VGA output. Also most screens have a res of just 480 lines high? Seems quite low, is that enough good enough for DVD's? Always thought SD PAL was 576 lines high.
I'd almost certainly get an professional to fit the roof screen, how much should I expect to pay (minus cost of screen itself)?

For audio, I've got a Kenwood W7544U HU, which has a line in jack, so straight forward there to wire in. However if kids in back are watching stuff and I want to listen to music, then headphones will be in order. Would it be possible to drive 2 or 4 sets of bluetooth headphones directly from the Mac (it does have bluetooth built in)?

Next problem would be the placement of the laptop. On your lap would be a bit annoying. What's available for mounting a laptop in the car? I can almost envisage some sort of arm, which you swing/swivel it about on to bring it whoever needs to use it.

Tech support from both firms have told me that it so long as they both have 8 pin bus connectors it should be possible to connect them, but neither seems to be aware of the different physical shape of the connectors, and have not been able to offer any help re an adapter.
Does anyone know if a suitable adapter exists or, if not, if there is any other practicable way to bodge these together? Any help much appreciated.

How easy it it to remove the factory unit?
Should i go for a double DIN unit or a single DIN unit with an adapter plate?

Options this has to have are:

1) Bluetooth built in
2) IPod control with easy navigation

Price wise I'm willing to go up to £300 on this. Does anyone have any suggestions for a unit?

Hi everyone,

Im new to the forum and to the whole ICE stuff, so im sorry if i ask stupid questions.

Basically i've had my first car which is a ford fiesta 02 reg, which has a tape deck in it for a while now, so the time has come to replace it with a new head unit, and i would like some advice on them as i dont understand some of the more technical side of them when it comes to preamp etc, for adding speakers and subs

At the moment i am just looking to buy a head unit, but in the near future i will upgrade the font speakers and add a sub (or twin sub) and an amp.

In the end i want a decent system that has reasonable power and bass so that i can listen to it loud when i want to.
Im not after a system thats top of the range and costs the earth, but at the same time i dont want it to be too cheap.

Would you be able to recommend some head units to me that will enable me to do those future upgrades and enable me to have a decent overall system in the end.
The only main feature that i want the head unit to have is the ipod control so i can play my ipod through it.

My price range for the head unit is around the £150 mark but £200 at the max

Thanks
Chris
