Hello all,
I rent a one bedrrom loft that shares a Wireless Internet connection via a Linksys Wireless-g 1348 with the main house some 100+ yards away. Currently, I am using an USB adapter/antenna to stengthen the signal and data quality - up from a sparatic signal (of one bar) to a now 50+% signal and 83% quality (4 bars) connection.
My questions are:
Would I be able to obtain a better signal/quality connection if I purchased an additional Linksys Wireless Router (or something else) for my residence to connect to the USB adapter/antenna which would serve as some sort of an Access Point connection (something like adding an additional antenna source)?
Also, could I gain the benefit of getting a wireless signal to my laptop without being hardwired to the USB port on the laptop with this connection type?
However, the biggest question is whether the reception quality of the signal would increase as well?
Please advise.

I have been happily using homeplugs to get fast internet to my otherwise cable-inaccessible room for about 4 months.

Yesterday when trying to get online on my desktop PC I was told "This computer has limited or no connectivity".

I have tried powering off/on the router, although all the right lights were on, and I am still able to connect wirelessly via my laptop/iPhone.

My desktop can connect to the network as usual (via the homeplugs), but there is no internet connection available.

So if the fault is not between the phone socket and the router, or the router and the network card, I'm guessing it must be something to do with my desktop PC.

This is driving me mad and seems completely illogical. Have I missed something obvious? Could there be a problem with one of the homeplugs?

Hi all,

I've been thinking about setting up a basic home network between 3 rooms in the house. All rooms have new computers, all running Windows 7 Home Edition.

I've read the basics on networking and NAS on this forum but I'm still quite unsure of what I'm getting myself into. My intention is to have all 3 computers accessing movies, music and other files from the same place, nothing else. I already have ethernet cables for all 3 rooms connected to the modem/router in the hallway so I won't be requiring any wireless capabilities.

Can anyone tell me if this ReadyNAS is sufficient for my needs? Netgear RND2000 ReadyNAS Duo

If not, can anyone recommend any alternatives? This is the sort of price I'd like to pay (obviously excluding hard drives).

Does anyone have any experience with this item and most importantly, would I be able to access and view high definition material smoothly from any of the 3 connected computers without any judder, glitches, slowdown etc?

All help and views appreciated.

Hi, am looking to get a set of Homeplugs, so i can connect my Ps3, SKY HD (when VOD becomes available) and TV via ethernet to my home network.

Is it worth buying a set of homeplugs with a bridge built in, such as this one from Cisco? Linksys By Cisco PLS300-UK Powerline Av 200mbps Network: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

Or is the it best just to get an individual set and put a cheap switch on it? This will allow all of the items to be connected to operate at the same time wont it? Im sure it will, like the ethernet ports on a router, but thought i would just check first.

If this is the best option, are these the best out there?
dabs.com - Belkin Gigabit Powerline HD Starter Kit up to 1000Mbps (F5D4076UK)

And what sort of switch should i go for if this is the line to persue. Thanks in advance.

I have just purchased the samsung nc10 mini notebook, which is a nice piece of kit by the way.

Now I am trying to set it up to the internet using wireless to my BT Homehub 2 router. I right click "Wireless network icon" on the taskbar and the go to "View Available Wireless Networks".

Here it shows my router and 2 surrounding routers. When i try to connect to my router, I type in the wep key, fine, it tries to connect and says " Waiting for the Network" for about a 30 seconds but doesn't do anything, it doesn't wan't to connect for some reason.

I've noticed my router's wep key is WPA, but when i find my router on the notebook and try to connect it says it is WPA2 ???? Whatever that means?

The wireless card is ON, have also tried through ethernet and works fine, just doesn't wan't to connect wirelessly?

Thanks in advance

Hi Everyone,

So far i have been using this forum on a read only basis, the answers to my questions are usually here, but now for the first time I have a question that i cant locate! Thanks to everyone for making this forum a really useful resource.

I am setting up an office, I need to connect the a BT master socket to the RJ45 patch panel. Normally the telephones are attached directly to the back of the patch panel, and we use adapters on the other side of the cable to make the phones work.

However in this setup there is no PABX system. We have a BT master socket installed in the actual cabinet that holds that patch panel.

What i need to do is to plug a cable from the BT master socket directly into a RJ45 port. On the other side I would use a standard RF45 to BT socket adapter to connect the phone.

I have looked in Maplins for something to do it, but cant see anything.

I imagine I will need to wire a BT socket to a RJ45 plug, and plug it into the port. Is this correct?

If so can anyone let me know what wires need to be at what sections of the BT plug and RF45 plug?

Thanks in advance

Ioan

Hi,

I've recently moved house and had the 10MB virgin broadband installed (we're in the fibre optic area aswell). The modem (and router when it arrives) will be setup in the living room next to where the cable comes in.

When the engineer came round to install everything he mentioned I had a second Ethernet port in the dining room and I could use this to access the internet. He didn't really give much info on how to do this unfortunately. I have tried connecting an Ethernet cable to the socket and then to my Mac but no internet connection is found.

I have followed the cable from the dining room and goes to a separate socket behind the TV in the living room. Does anyone have any ideas on how I may utilise this second Ethernet point as it would be quite handy?

thanks in advance.
