The Toshiba 32AV615DB looks like great value, but will it show images from a blu-ray player? I know it's not 'compatible' with 1050 images, but does this mean it won't show any image at all from a blu-ray player, at 720, for example.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Most of the blurays I've watched so far are medium to terrible for this. Is it due to compression?

I had thought it must be down to my equipment until I watched 'Speedracer' and then, notably, 'Knowing' which was just incredibly clear throughout, it looked almost unreal.

The same is true actually for the BBC HD channel on Virgin (720i or 720p not sure, but looks like 720p), sometimes it is incredible and other times looking quite compressed.

Anyone else getting this? The variable, sometimes quite low frame-rate on BD movies is barely acceptable but for some dics I find the DVD more watchable in 576p.

My kit:
Panasonic 50" plasma 720p native (accepts 576p,720i/p, 1080i/p)
LG multiblue Bluray rom drive
Nvidia 9600GT with HDMI port

Hi. I want to update my surround sound DVD player to allow me to play downloaded films on DivX Avi etc formats; I would also like it to be able to accept a USB 2.0 or my Storex multimedia/hdd player and have HD capability.

I currently have a [/B]Loewe Modus 42[/B] TV which is 1080i. My surround sound DVD player is a Philips AXD7305.

I have a basic understanding of these things but need advice from those who really knows what they are talking about. My first question is can I replace just the DVD, retaining the subwoofer, and speakers to be connected to a new DVD player? If so, do I go for a cheapy such as the Philips DVP3360 or DVP 5996, or am I better off spending more, £300 + I would expect but I don’t know what extra I would be getting? I know that upscaling is an issue of ‘pay for what you get’ but I don’t know what to look for etc.

Can anyone recommend any players/systems?

Any advice would be great - thanks

I heard that Denon DVD 3910 could do that, however it would be nice if someone can confirm that. Also it would be nice to find out about other players that can output multichannel over optical output. I need this because I have a pre-amp that handles DTS, and Dolby Digital but does not have HDMI inputs.
Thanks in advance,

Hello all.

I’m a long time lurker, first time beggar of knowledge.

I have recently purchased a Sony 40W5500 and am making that scary leap into the HD world. I have SKY HD and am looking into the Blu-Ray side of things. However, realistically I will not be purchasing many Blu-Ray discs at first and so would like to make the most of DVDs. Most of my Buddies are bullying me towards a PS3 and I have to agree that is something that interests me.

My questions to you guys are these,

How does the PS3 compare (upscaling DVD & Blu-Ray) to Sony’s upscaling DVD players and Blu-Ray players? Are they using the same technology in the PS3 or am I better of purchasing separate upscaling DVD player and Blu-Ray player?

Cheers,

Phil
